Vinny Prospal had the go-ahead goal and an assist in a four-goal second period to help the Columbus Blue Jackets beat Calgary 6-4 on Friday night in the Flames' first game since they traded longtime captain Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh
Mark Letestu, Matt Calvert, Derick Brasard, Ryan Johansen and R.J. Umberger also scored for the Blue Jackets. Columbus, 1-2-1 on its four-game trip, climbed within a point of St. Louis for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Blue Jackets also evened their record at 14-14-7 and snapped Calgary's eight-game home winning streak.
Brian McGrattan, Mikael Backlund, Dennis Wideman and Curtis Glencross scored for Calgary.
Iginla was traded to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night for a 2013 first-round draft pick and college prospects Ben Hanowski and Kenneth Agostino. Many of the fans in the crowd, announced as a sellout of 19,289, wore red jerseys with Iginla's name on the back.
The appreciative fans then stood up and gave a standing ovation in the first period when a stirring video tribute to Iginla was played on the jumbotron. While the fans rose to their feet, officials didn't immediately drop the puck as all Calgary players banged their sticks against the boards.
Columbus opened the scoring in the first period with a short-handed goal. T.J. Brodie's blind pass up the middle was intercepted by Letestu, who made a nice move to beat Miikka Kiprusoff.
The Blue Jackets took advantage of several more Calgary miscues in the second period, scoring four times at even strength, to open a 5-3 lead.
Columbus took the lead for good at 8:44 of the second when Umberger poked the puck past Jay Bouwmeester at the Blue Jackets' blue line and led a 2-on-1 rush that was finished off nicely by Prospal for an easy one-timer. Less than 90 seconds later on another odd-man rush, Calvert looked off Jack Johnson and shot instead, ripping a shot over Kiprusoff's glove to put Columbus ahead 3-1.
Calgary outshot Columbus 33-25.
Notes: Columbus rookie D Dalton Prout was a game-high plus-4 while also getting in a fight with McGrattan. ... Stajan picked up his 200th NHL assist ... McGrattan's goal was his first in 75 games, dating to Oct. 16, 2009 ... Calgary D Anton Babchuk was a healthy scratch for the 23rd time this season.

The Boston Bruins were duped by Jarome Iginla and the Calgary Flames.
Of course, Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli wouldnât say that, but itâs clear that itâs what he felt, thought, and fought back from spilling to the media during todayâs impromptu press conference at the TD Garden following the non-trade thatâs led to his club watching the 35-year...
Jarome Iginla is officially off the market. Hockey fans on the East Coast were up later than usual last night, waiting for the announcement that Iginla had been traded to the Boston Bruins. The rumors began swirling when Iginla was scratched from the Flames lineup on Wednesday night, implying that a deal was imminent. TSN’s Aaron Ward tweeted that the deal was done with Boston...
The Boston Bruins lost to Pittsburgh in the competition for Jarome Iginla. That should make it tougher for them to beat the already powerful Penguins in the playoffs.
It was a bitter battle to lose, of course. Especially considering Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli thought he already had the Calgary Flames' all-time leading goal scorer in the fold.
A few hours later,...
It’s been a long two days since the Bruins last played, and there was no shortage of drama during that time.
After blowing late leads against the Montreal Canadiens and losing out on the Jarome Iginla sweepstakes, the Bruins would be well within their rights to come out angry Saturday in Philadelphia. Of course, they’re professionals and will likely keep an even keel, but it...
The Calgary Flames have shipped franchise icon Jarome Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Talk about a confusing night. I shut off my computer, and phone at 1:00 am on Wednesday, March 27th with the thought that Iginla to the Bruins was essentially completed. Conflicting reports had been surfacing all night on the Twitter-verse, but general consensus was that Iginla was indeed going to Boston. When I woke up this morning,...

Although most reports indicated last night that Jarome Iginla was but hours away from being a Boston Bruin, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a late push for the veteran and ultimately outbid the Bruins.

With all of the focus on the Jarome Iginla trade last night, this incredible fight between super heavy weights Brian McGrattan and Patrick Bordeleau has gone virtually unrecognized. Both of these guys may have forgotten what it’s like to win games on a regular basis, but they sure haven’t forgotten how to fight.
The Flames, minus Iginla, managed to squeak out a 4-3 win over...
Goddamn. Jay Feaster is so incompetent at his job that now he's expanded business to Boston. Not only did he tell Chiarelli that the Bruins had Jarome Iginla, he also requested the Bruins sign that one-year contract with Matt Bartkowski so he'd be all contracted up for the Flames when the trade was finalized.
Matt Bartkowski confirmed his one-way contract was...
