Remember, kids: if you suck at your job, remember to be famous while doing it. That way you’ll be assured of landing a job with someone desperate to latch on to someone famous when you get fired because you sucked. Bobby Valentine is the latest in sports to follow Isiah Thomas’ footsteps and give it the ol’ college try. The Connecticut Post is reporting that Sacred Heart University, a Division I school in Fairfield, Conn., will hire Valentine as its next athletic director. It’s a nice attention-grabber for a school most of us have never heard of, but that is about as far as it goes in terms of positives. The odds of this working out aren’t very good. Valentine brings a whopping zero days experience in college athletics to the table, and is coming off a disastrous showing in which he managed the Red Sox to their worst finish in four decades. That, of course, was Valentine’s first big-league managing gig in 10 years, which does not speak well to his ability to jump in and adapt to something from out of the blue. He also has a long history of rubbing people the wrong way, which is not exactly something that sticks out as a positive where half your job description involves hobnobbing with boosters. But apparently Sacred Heart sees itself as playing with house money. If this doesn’t work out, well, no one expected it to. And if it does, the school will get the attention that somehow did not come to fruition with having John Ratzenberger on its Board of Trustees.
