Star tight end Antonio Gates is beyond eager to get back out on the field with his San Diego Chargers teammates.
The Chargers need him back as well, knowing that their struggles inside the 20-yard line have a lot to do with Gates not providing a big target for Philip Rivers to throw to.
After missing the last three games with painful plantar fasciitis in his right foot, Gates gets the bye weekend to continue his rest and receive treatment. He'd like to be back in uniform for the Chargers' game at the New York Jets on Oct. 23, but is making no promises.
At the very least, he'll need to make it through a few practices next week.
Gates has been dogged by the injury since last season.
