Atlanta Braves catcher Gerald Laird can breathe more easily now that he had his hand X-rayed. Laird took a pitch on the left hand from White Sox starter Jose Quintana on Sunday. He left the game for X-rays, but those came up negative. MLB.com's Brian Hedger reports that Laird is listed as day-to-day with a bruise, and he is grateful that he will avoid the disabled list. Laird discussed the injury following the X-ray. Said Laird, "I don't know if my knuckle popped or what happened, but it's not broken, which I'm happy about. Two years ago, I got hit in the same hand and broke my finger. I'm just glad it's not broken. It's the only thing that worries you when you get hit in the hand or the fingers. It's so fragile right there, so I'm glad it's just not [broken]." Laird has done a remarkable job as the backup catcher to Evan Gattis early in the season and Brian McCann since then, proving himself a valuable asset. Laird is hitting .306/.390./417 with a home run and 11 RBI in 72 at bats. He is especially strong with runners in scoring position, 7 for 13 with 9 RBI. He also brings postseason experience as he was Detroit's backup catcher in their 2012 American League championship season. Follow Raymond on Twitter @RayBureau. Your browser does not support iframes. A foul tip by Atlanta Braves All-Star Freddie Freeman smashed a camera behind home plate at Citi Field during Wednesday night's game against the New York Mets. It happened in the first pitch of Freeman's second inning at-bat. No word yet if Freeman has to pay for it. It's the third time this season that the glass in...

As trade deadline approaches, Braves hold ground in NL East

With ten days left before the trade deadline, the Braves are in the precarious position of deciding whether to pull the string on a trade or stand pat. Despite their tough series loss in Chicago, the Braves held their ground in the NL East with a 6-1/2 game lead over the Phillies and a 7 game lead over the Nationals. Their tough loss in the series finale thanks to little run support...

Jason Heyward Makes Incredible Diving Catch To Save Win For Braves

Jason Heyward returned to the Braves lineup on Monday after missing six games with a hamstring injury and he made sure he came back with a bang. With two outs and two men on base in the bottom of the ninth of a 2-1 game, Heyward had to chase down a line drive off the bat of Mets pinch hitter Justin Turner. If the ball landed, the Mets certainly would have tied, if not won, the game...

Braves' Tim Hudson suffers broken ankle in collision at first

Instead of celebrating what had the makings to be one of Tim Hudson's finest starts this season the Braves experienced the nightmare of seeing Hudson carted off the field with a right ankle fracture. The Braves tweeted after the game that Hudson will have surgery in Atlanta when the swelling in his ankle goes down. Hudson fell face-first to the ground in agony after his right...

Braves' Paul Maholm sent to Atlanta for wrist examination

After a fine first three months of the season, Atlanta Braves left-hander Paul Maholm has struggled mightily in three July starts. We may soon find out why. After leaving Saturday's game with a left wrist strain, Maholm will not travel to New York with the team to begin their four-game series with the Mets. Instead, he will fly back to Atlanta for further examination on his...

Medlen Struggles Again as Mets Down Braves

Once again, the Atlanta Braves struggled to score runs against the New York Mets on Tuesday night, as the Mets were able to score 3 runs late to defeat the Braves, 4-1. The Braves were 1-8 with RISP during Tuesday’s game.  That does not bode well for getting runs or a win in any game. The only Braves run of the game came from the very 1st batter, Andrelton Simmons.  Simmons led...

Atlanta Braves Pitcher Tim Hudson Suffers Horrific Ankle Injury

This is one of those things that just sucks. Veteran Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson was in the midst of throwing a tremendous game Wednesday night against the New York Mets (7 2/3 innings, 2 ER, 9 Ks) when in the process of making a routine play at first he suffered what could be a career ending type injury for the 38-year old pitcher. Let me go ahead and warn you--this sucker...

Johnson & Johnson, Heyward deliver in 9th; Braves beat Mets 2-1

After watching teammate Mike Minor pitch a complete-game gem and lose Sunday at Chicago, it looked as if the Braves’ Julio Teheran might endure a similar fate Monday night against the Mets. Teheran pitched six crisp innings, but the Braves’ defense failed him a couple of times, and the offense did, too. Until the ninth inning. Johnson & Johnson came through big time in the...

Braves lose Hudson, beat Mets

Tim Hudson took a shutout into the eighth inning before getting spiked at first base and carted off the field during the Atlanta Braves' 8-2 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night. Evan Gattis, Dan Uggla and Andrelton Simmons all homered off an ineffective Jeremy Hefner to help the Braves' bats break loose after scoring only four runs in their previous three games...
