ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves have placed struggling reliever Jonny Venters on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow impingement. Thursday's move came after the left-hander gave up his sixth homer of the season to Jeff Baker in Wednesday night's 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Left-hander Luis Avilan was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett. Avilan was 3-6 with a 3.23 ERA in 16 games, including 12 starts, at Double-A Mississippi. Avilan was assigned to the Gwinnett roster on Wednesday. Venters had six wins, nine saves and a 1.84 ERA last year as a top setup man for closer Craig Kimbrel. He allowed only three homers in 2010 and 2011 combined. He is 3-3 with a 4.45 ERA and no saves this season.

Chipper Jones Caps Final All-Star Selection With Five-Hit Night for Braves

A 5-for-5 day is a relative rarity in baseball, as common for hitters as a complete game shutout is for most modern pitchers. It happens once in a while, but a player has to be pretty good to pull it off -- and great to pull it off on cue. Chipper Jones added another jewel to the crown of his major league career on Tuesday night, going 5-for-5 on the same day he was named as the...

Sheets finishes strong in Double-A outing

Ben Sheets gave up four runs in five innings for the Double-A Mississippi Braves in his first professional appearance in nearly two years. The veteran right-hander gave up two runs in both the first and second innings, but settled down after that, retiring 10 in a row to end his outing. He struck out six and walked one. The Atlanta Braves hope the four-time All-Star can bolster...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Cubs 7-2-12

Kolbi likes to sit here. And she likes to swipe my camera. No complaints.   Kolbi really likes sitting out here by the bullpen, "in their laps," she says. It does feel really close, but since most of them don't sit on the bench for the whole game anymore it's not a huge deal. I went early and took BP pictures, as usual. Would it kill these boys to smile now and...

Bourn on the Fourth of July

The final vote frenzy to select the 34th man for each All-Star team was rife with sketchy alliances, bad slogans, and no small amount of angst.  Lost amongst the barrage of hashtags, team emails, and unofficial campaign managers was perhaps the biggest All-Star snub in recent history.  Michael Bourn quietly went about the business of playing baseball, and that is a darn shame...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Nationals 6-30-12

Strasburg fan with the glittering jersey watching his favorite player hit. Hottest day in Atlanta history. Hottest game I've ever attended. We had awesome seats thanks to Alison's dad's work, and Kolbi and her EO-lovin' hubby came along. I think my brain melted in this game, because here's what I remember: The guy above and his sparkly #37 jersey, Strasburg having...

Braves hit 4 homers to beat Cubs

ATLANTA (AP) -- Jason Heyward and Brian McCann each hit a two-run homer in the first inning, helping Mike Minor and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 on Thursday night. Freddie Freeman and Juan Francisco also connected for Atlanta, which salvaged a split of the four-game series. Minor (5-6) held the Cubs without a hit until the fifth and gave up three runs, two earned...

Atlanta Braves shortstop got his start in Yorkton

From Canada.com Andrelton Simmons didn't ask for much. He simply wanted an opportunity to play baseball for the summer. Bill Sobkow and the Yorkton Cardinals gave him that chance. Three years later, Simmons is enjoying a solid rookie season with the Atlanta Braves. "Did we know what we were getting when (Simmons) came to us? No, not at all,"...

McCann's slam powers Braves over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Brian McCann hit a grand slam, Tim Hudson tossed four-hit ball over seven innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 to spoil Ryan Howard's season debut Friday night. Howard doubled in his first at-bat and was 2 for 4 in his first game since rupturing his left Achilles tendon on the final swing in a postseason elimination loss to St...

Cameraman makes nice one-handed catch

A TV cameraman made what has to be the most nonchalant one-handed catch of a foul ball this season— and he didn't stop doing his job while grabbing the ball. During the first inning of the Chicago Cubs-Atlanta Braves game Thursday night at Turner Field, a foul ball was hit in the direction of the cameraman wearing a Braves hat— so you know he works for TBS— on the second...

Braves Spoil Howard's Return to Lineup, Win 5-0.

Final: Braves 5, Phillies 0. WP: Tim Hudson (7-4, 3.56 ERA) LP: Antonio Bastardo (2-3, 5.34 ERA) Up until the top-half of the 8th inning, Friday night's game was played at a rapid, scoreless pace.  Both starters lasted seven innings, giving up zero runs to their opposition.  Things turned for the worse for the Phillies, after Kendrick exited the game.  Antonio Bastardo allowed...

Braves Slam Past Phillies

The Atlanta Braves shut out the Phillies, 5-0 on Friday. KENDRICK SUPERB Kyle Kendrick was surprisingly lights out.  The right-hander pitched seven shutout innings.  He only surrendered four hits, and walked one.  He struck out five. Unfortunately for Kendrick, Hudson was just as good, tossing seven scoreless innings.  The Phillies only managed four hits and a walk against Hudson...
