The Atlanta Braves recently welcomed All-Star catcher Brian McCann back from his shoulder injury. Atlanta will now have to juggle McCann and hot-hitting backstop Evan Gattis to keep both bats in the lineup. However, this may only prove an issue for the remainder of the season, as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports says the "handwriting is on the wall" for McCann to exit via free agency after the season. McCann will hit the open market after the season is over, and Heyman believes it's all but guaranteed that the Braves will allow him to sign with another team without putting up much of a fight. Atlanta has held steady at roughly a $90 million payroll recently, and with Gattis and top catching prospect Christian Betancourt in the fold it will be easier to allow McCann to walk. For the time being, McCann figures to see a majority of the playing time behind the plate, assuming he is able to produce and remains healthy. Gattis will still catch, but he could also be used in the outfield and occasionally at first base. There's no denying that Gattis set the baseball world on fire with his hot start, but it still seems a bit premature to say the writing's on the wall for McCann's exit. Gattis is a 26-year-old rookie, and while his numbers in the minors were solid, he's still only maintained an on base percentage of .305. He's certainly hitting with power -- eight doubles and seven home runs over 105 plate appearances -- but Atlanta will likely see if he can continue this pace while monitoring how things play out with McCann's return.
