Buster Olney has made it no secret how much he like the Diamondbacks roster heading into the 2012 season. Just a couple of days after giving high praise to Arizona’s rotation and bullpen, the ESPN baseball writer ranks the D’Backs having the best overall outfield in the game.
Here is full description of what Olney said in the ESPN insider article.
Justin Upton hovered on the edges of the National League MVP race last season, eventually finishing fourth in the voting, yet there is a sense among the Arizona talent evaluators that Upton, now 24, has barely scratched the surface of what he could be. And this is a slugger who racked up 75 extra-base hits last season and had an OPS-plus of 141, while playing in 159 games; the D-backs believe that as he reduces the emotional peaks and valleys of his at-bats, as he gains more consistency, he’ll win an MVP award.
But Upton is just part of why the Arizona outfield is so good. Chris Young ranked second among center fielders i...

2011 Arizona Diamondbacks Player Evaluations: Ryan Roberts
When he made the Diamondbacks roster coming out of spring training, there wasn’t a ton expected from Ryan Roberts. Mostly a career minor leaguer, Roberts was expected to be used in a pinch hitting role and part-time utility man off the bench.
Little did Kirk Gibson and D’Backs fans would soon find out that by the end of the season, Roberts was the team’s everyday...
2-time All-Star Melvin Mora retires, was nearly 40
Two-time All-Star Melvin Mora is retiring from baseball, five weeks shy of his 40th birthday.
Mora played 13 seasons in the big leagues, 10 of them with the Baltimore Orioles. He began last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, was released on July 1 while hitting .228 with no home runs and did not play again in the majors.
''It's a very difficult decision because this...
Top 50 Prospects: #18 – Tyler Skaggs
#18 Tyler Skaggs
Arizona Diamondbacks
DOB: 7/13/1991
Previous Rank: N/R
ETA: 2012
Skaggs really has nothing left to prove in the Minors in our opinion, even though he has never thrown a Triple-A pitch. His 10 starts in the Southern League were as convincing as any collected by any southpaw not named Matt Moore this season. He posted a 2.50 ERA for Mobile, striking out 73 guys...
D-backs' In-House Options for Fifth Starter
While it can be foolish to rely on a single rookie to anchor the back end of your rotation, the Arizona Diamondbacks have several rookie options for their fifth starter slot, making it likely that at least one of them will have success in that role.
Olney's Latest: Yankees, Ethier, Angels, Blue Jays
In today's Insider-only blog post, ESPN's Buster Olney ranks the ten best outfields in the game. The Cardinals, Yankees, and Rangers top the list, though I thought it was surprising the Rays didn't even garner an honorable mention. Here are Buster's rumors...

D-backs primed to build on season of success
It is a new year for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but they would be quite happy if 2012 looks a lot like 2011.
Olney On Rays, Quentin, Polanco, Marlins, Darvish
After ranking MLB's best rotations, bullpens, infields, outfields, and lineups in December, ESPN.com's Buster Olney opened up 2012 with his overall power rankings. The Rays are ranked No. 1 thanks in large part to their outstanding rotation. This year, Matt Moore joins the mix and Olney writes that the left-hander has the numbers and the ability of Stephen Strasburg without...
Boras Seeks Five Years For Edwin Jackson
Edwin Jackson's asking price is approximately $60MM over five years, writes ESPNNewYork's Wallace Matthews. The Yankees like the free agent righty, "but not at that price," writes Matthews. Matthews' colleague Buster Olney tweeted the same, saying that unless the Yankees' budget grows, there's no room for Jackson.
Ultimately I expect Jackson to...
