WITH Rob Gronkowski falling apart and Aaron Hernandez being fitted for a wedding gown, it seemed the Patriots would be thin at TE, so I took a look.

It's worse than I thought.

For a team that just gave away Wes Welker, and is accustomed to having 2 of the leagues better TE's, the Pats are scraping the bottom now. Their TOP guy at the position now is Jake Ballard. Yeah him. The former Giant, who was completely out of football in 2012 due to an ACL injury.

Maybe the Patriots will tap the Eagles or Raiders for a TE? Wouldn't it be neat if the Eagles could somehow fob Clay Harbor off on them for a 3rd or 4th rounder in the 2015 Draft? Or if the Raiders could sell them on David Ausberry for a 5th or 6th rounder in 2014?

  • I couldn't see anyone giving up a 3rd round pick for a 4th TE, but maybe for Celek....
  • The Patriots need a STARTING TE. Last year Harbor was a second stringer, and even was our starter when Celek was hurt.

If you look at the Patriots roster, the FA landscape and other teams tradeable depth at the position, NOBODY is better suited to help them than the Eagles. It's a sellers market!

Tom Brady is without a security blanket at WR or TE, and the roster doesn't feature a SINGLE threat as a pass catching back, let alone one who can line up at H-back or TE.

Harbor is a no doubt legit NFL TE, who offers the Patriots more than they're liable to get ANYWHERE else among the remaining 30 teams. I think we should try to fleece them, and if we can, then do it.
  • The Patriots are not the team to be fleeced. They do the fleecing. They didn't give up that much for Randy Moss, they most certainly won't do it for a guy who most likely wont make the roster. The truth is the Eagles have no bargaining power on such a move. Harbor hasn't shown to be talented enough, and they simply have too many guys on the roster who play the same position. Celek would be the best option for both parties. He's a proven starter with pass catching abilities. The Eagles could use the cap dump since they have Casey and Ertz. Finally if Harbor is as good as you claim he is then why would you want to move him? He plays special teams as well. Overall he has more value than Celek at a fraction of the cost. If you want a 3rd Or 4th moving Celek would be the best option.
  • The idea here isn't to chase a 3rd rounder, it's to get value for Harbor.

Fact is, few teams in the NFL have quality depth at TE, and many teams(Ari, Atl, Buf, Cle, Mia, NE, NYJ, SD, TB, Ten) could use some depth at the position. Many of these teams don't even have a starter as god as Harbor, so if the Patriots wanted to cheap out, they can just end up stuck without.

Scarcity dictates price. This is what I mean by a sellers market.
  • I think you are overvaluing Harbor. Like 20 wrote you will get a 6th rounder at best for the
Guy. Celek is the guy who should be traded. He's the only one who still has value, at some
Point soon will lose his starting job, and he doesn't play special teams. He is the best value player
    the Eagles have to trade.
  • I would love to get a 4th for harbor. He's hardly worth a 6th, especially now that we have Casey celek ertz.
  • You can't determine Harbor's worth based on what he's worth to THIS roster. You have to base his worth on what a team that NEEDS what he does, is willing to part with for him.

It's the same reason why so many FA players end up being overpaid EVERY year. Teams reeeeach for what they don't have. If Harbor went to the Patriots today he'd be the best TE on their roster, until Gronk could prove he could stay healthy.

Right now is a rare chance to bend Bill Belichik over a barrel and...Remember 'Pulp Fiction' and the scene with "The Gimp"? There is no Bruce Willis to save ol' Bellycheat. Just bad music, corn-holing, and YeeHawing!
  • But the pats r looking at it as how much do the eagles need him and they realize him playing Lb shows how much we don't.
  • You guys keep MISSING my point!

This is the list of teams with one or fewer quality TE's:
Ari, Atl, Buf, Cle, Mia, NE, NYJ, SD, TB, Ten.
If Harbor IS cut he's free to go ANYWHERE he wants. Why would he willingly go to a place where he'd sit behind Gronk (once he's healthy), like he sat behind Celek; when he could go to a team like the Jets or the Titans and start?

The Patriots (or some other team) could lock him in by trading for him PRIOR to a release. It's trying to get that rare commodity that drives up the price. As long as we don't lose our nerve and sell cheap to the first sucker that comes knocking.
  • Cause only one of the teams u mentioned has a need for a TE and TOM BRADY. Plus Miami has Dustin Keller, atl Gonzalez, sd gates, and the rest have no qb worth wanting to play for when u can play for TOM BRADY in a TWO TE set plus he's going to push for the number one spot until gronk is healthy. Oh and it's TOM F#CKING BRADY
  • Keller can't stay healthy, Gonzalez is 80, and Gates can't stay healthy. But it's just a difference of opinion.

Odds are Harbor won't end up leaving here til final cuts anyway. At that point he'd have trouble catching on anywhere.

  • Look at this drama free post.
    Admit it, this is nice.

We've disagreed PLENTY today, but looking up and down the page, all you see is discussion after discussion based on football.

This is how it SHOULD be.
    How it COULD be.
    How it WILL be.
