The last time the Pittsburgh Pirates played in a winner-take-all game in a playoff series, they lost Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS when Atlanta rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Braves memorably won on Sid Bream‘s slide into home, just beating the tag of Pirates catcher Mike LaValliere in one of the great moments in playoff history.
The Pirates are back in the postseason for the first time since then and will visit St. Louis on Wednesday in Game 5 of the NLDS. The Cards will open as -145 favorites at Bovada with Live Betting.
St. Louis forced a deciding Game 5 with a 2-1 win in Pittsburgh on Monday. Rookie Michael Wacha was brilliant, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Pedro Alvarez homered off Wacha with one out in the inning for the Pirates’ only hit. Matt Holliday‘s two-run homer in the sixth inning accounted for the Cardinals’ runs. The vast majority of the Cardinals players are very familiar with win-or-go-home games, as St. Louis is 7-1 the pa...

The St. Louis Cardinals will partake in the glorious, heart-pounding, frustrating-yet-exhilarating experience that is Game 5 of the National League Division Series for the third year in a row. They won both of those two previous games, but one player in particular most certainly hopes the game is more similar to 2011 than 2012 — Adam Wainwright.
The Cardinals 2011 ace, Chris Carpenter...
It was no secret that the key to winning game five of the National League Division Series would require a strong performance from Adam Wainwright. However, what he ultimately delivered was far more than just that. It was an effort that removed any doubt about whether he belonged among the most exclusive class of Cardinal hurlers all-time, Waino delivered. And it is now clear that...
ST. LOUIS -- When the best start of his career was complete, as his teammates rushed around to celebrate yet another October moment, Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright wrapped up Yadier Molina in an embrace that neither is likely to forget.

In the balance will hang a trip to the NLCS to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. That's the macro.
Anytime 50 paid professionals get together knowing half of them will have to start all over on their professional goals, memorable things can, and often do, happen.
The micro, though, may be just as compelling.
I can't remember...
After yesterday's games, the Red Sox are in and the Tigers get to fight another day. The Tigers forced a Game 5 with a thrilling (and disputed) win over the Athletics. Yesterday, I speculated on whether Max Scherzer would start instead of Doug Fister. He did not. But Fister was decent and Scherzer did pitch after all and got the win in relief. After all, he got the run support...

“It all starts at the top…with the front office.” – Adam Wainwright.
Following his complete game, NLDS Game 5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wainwright said those words when asked about how the St. Louis Cardinals continue to churn out winning season after winning season, playoff win after playoff win. And as soon as he said it, it made the Phillies decline stand out...
Yadier Molina and Game 5 pitching hero Adam Wainright shared this intimate embrace after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 on Wednesday night. I mean they were a couple of inches away from a kiss there. It’s kind of sweet seeing how close they are. All that was missing was a little Diana Ross and Lionel […]
