Fox Sports Arizona:
In Carson Palmer -- whom coach Bruce Arians described as "our starter" earlier this week at Palmer's introductory press conference -- the Cardinals have their quarterback. Their quarterback for now, anyway.
Palmer, 33, is on a reworked two-year deal that includes a club option for 2015, and the only other quarterbacks on the roster are backup Drew Stanton -- a six-year veteran who hasn't thrown a pass in the past two seasons -- along with journeyman veteran Brian Hoyer and second-year pro Ryan Lindley. Not a franchise quarterback among them, right?
So it remains plausible that the Cardinals would consider selecting a quarterback of the future at some point early in the upcoming draft, and that makes this tweet Thursday from ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter interesting and noteworthy:
Cardinals HC Bruce Arians and GM Steve Keim are scheduled to hold a private workout Saturday at USC for QB Matt Barkley. Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 4, 2013
To be clear, Barkley would be an unlikely pick at No. 7 overall, where the Cardinals select in the first round; actually, the consensus among FOXSports.com draft guru Peter Schrager and ESPN experts Mel Kiper and Todd McShay is that Barkley won't go in the first round. Should those projections turn out to be accurate, the private workout would presumably give the Cards the insight to know whether Barkley, the four-year USC starter, would be worth taking in Round 2 (at No. 38 overall) and developing for the future.
It should be noted that Barkley isn't the only QB the Cardinals are known to be interested in, as reports surfaced last week that the team worked out former North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon in Raleigh.
BEST OF MAXIM
Carson Palmer has gone to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for what might as well be a bag of balls rather than draft picks (cue killjoy saying “but Tom Brady went in the sixth round”), yet most neutral observers admit that the Cardinals probably did not need to give up anything seeing as the Oakland Raiders would have been forced to cut him anyways. Unfortunately, Palmer probably...
Carson Palmer is 33 years old, an interception machine, and hasn’t made a Pro Bowl since 2006, but the Arizona Cardinals think he can still be an elite quarterback.
Cardinals GM Steve Keim says he began to study Palmer immediately after he was promoted to the top spot in Arizona’s front office three months ago.
The more Keim looked at Palmer, the more he liked what he saw, and...
The trade is completed; and Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals seem to both be happy with the match.
While I am not keen on the idea of Palmer in Cardinal red, the price was cheap, the risk is low, and the reward is… well to be determined.
What Carson Palmer brings to Arizona is a guy who is comfortable dropping back deep in the pocket, hitting his last step in the drop and...
With the announcement of the trade to Seattle for QB Matt Flynn this comes as really no surprise. Oakland announced on Tuesday that they have traded QB Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals. The deal includes switching 2013 draft picks … Continue reading →

Last week I posted a piece about the Raiders options with Carson Palmer. Since then, the Raiders have traded for a new QB, former Packer and Seahawk Matt Flynn. They also traded Palmer to Arizona, effective yesterday.
Since the trade, I’ve received a lot of questions about why Palmer counts against the cap and how the “dead money” works.
Here is text from last week’s...

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Former USC quarterback Matt Barkley, considered in the preseason as a contender for the top overall pick, has seen his draft stock take a tumble due to a shoulder injury and scouts questioning his arm strength.
Barkley is now looking at being...
With a two-time Pro Bowl selection now under center in Arizona, standout Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will be in “prove it mode” in 2013. Handcuffed by an atrocious collection of quarterbacks since Kurt Warner retired in 2009, the 6-foot-4, 217 pound Fitzgerald has caught 764 balls for 10,413 yards and 77 touchdowns in 140 games as a Cardinal. “I’m coming off...
Have you ever seen that episode of “The Simpsons” where Bart gets placed in the remedial class? There’s a very funny scene in which they play musical chairs, but there are far more seats available than players. In essence, every round the same people stayed in the game while simply changing seats. That’s basically how the bottom of the NFL operates with quarterbacks. We see...
