The Cubs have announced that Jacob Turner, who was acquired earlier this week, will be added to the 25 man roster before today’s finale against the Tampa Bay Rays. Turner will report the bullpen to be under the tutelage of Lester Strode and Chris Bosio. Turner will wear #38 for his duration with the Cubs.
Turner, on the year has a 4-7 record, with a 4.26 ERA, and a 6.2 k/9 rate. The Cubs are hoping that he’ll turn around like Jake Arrieta did last year. The Cubs unly gave up two low-level prospects for Turner, who had overstayed his welcome in Miami. Turner was a top prospect in the Tigers organization, and was traded several years ago as a package for Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez.
The Cubs have also activated reliever, Neil Ramirez from the 15 day disabled list. Ramirez, who was sent to the Cubs via the Matt Garza trade last July, has been a valuable bullpen arm, and has established himself as the set-up man. On rare occasions, he has filled in as the closer. He has 36 strikeouts to just 10 walks, and has appeared in 33 games so far this year. His 2.78 FIP ranks as one of the best in the league, and the Cubs bullpen should be happy to see his return.
In corresponding moves, the Cubs have optioned southpaw, Chris Rusin back to AAA Iowa. Rusin didn’t see much use in his brief stint with the major league level, appearing in only 4 games. The Cubs have also place reliever, Brian Schlitter on the DL for shoulder soreness as a precaution. In 53 games, Schlitter accrued a 3.57 ERA, a 3.68 FIP, and a 2-3 W/L record.
