In basketball, there is a substantial difference between the college and professional level. The rules, style of play, and the level of athleticism in particular vary widely between the two. Many love both levels of competitions, but there are huge camps on both sides that think only their version of the game is “real” basketball. That’s why news like Brad Stevens’ decision to join the Boston Celtics in lieu of chasing another deep run into the NCAA Tournament can be such a decisive issue. Many devotees of the college game will no doubt dislike the move, if for no other reason than the fact that their preferred form of the game has lost a respected, brilliant basketball mind that produced fun, hard-working and successful teams at the mid-major level. If you don’t believe me, then just turn your eye to the world’s most powerful think tank – Twitter. Many college fans were heartbroken at Stevens’ departure for the NBA: This is my response to Brad Stevens leaving Butler to coach the Celtics. pic.twitter.com/yJDWbI4AzB — Jennifer Pignolet (@JenPignolet) July 3, 2013 Brad Stevens leaving college basketball?!? Rip out my heart why don’t you. — Wyatt Foust (@WBBCoachFoust) July 3, 2013 Brad Stevens is leaving Butler to coach in the NBA, which is also known as “The Greedy College Coaches’ Graveyard.” — The Spinach (@the_spinach) July 3, 2013 Hate the Brad Stevens hire. Not because he’s bad, but because the NBA sucks and good coaches should stay in the NCAA — Greg Clarkin (@greg_clarkin) July 3, 2013 That Brad Stevens news is nuts. Sucks as a college bball fan who hates the NBA… — Brady Nemeth (@BTNemeth) July 3, 2013 BRAD STEVENS LEAVING TO COACH THE CELTICS IS THE WORST NEWS POSSIBLE FOR ANY COLLEGE BASKETBALL FAN — Kevin McFarland (@km_mcfarland) July 3, 2013 Really hate seeing Brad Stevens leave college basketball. A winner, but more importantly a class act. — Ross Andrews (@_SaucyRossy_) July 3, 2013 Stunned by the Brad Stevens news. College basketball lost a bit of its soul today. #CREAM — Skyler Cook (@skylerc) July 3, 2013 Why Brad Stevens why? You were great for college basketball! — Darryl Mosley (@DarrylMosley) July 3, 2013 Not sure how I feel about this Brad Stevens signing. Where’s the loyalty man? I get it, but still…. — Ben Haugen (@ben1232jazz) July 3, 2013 I love Brad Stevens but I hope this move flames out quickly so he comes back to college, or as I call it “basketball.” Not that NBA garbage. — Matt Stypulkoski (@M_Stypulkoski) July 3, 2013 Oh, whoops…sorry, that last one was mine. Here’s to a quick return to college, Brad Stevens. You’ll be dearly missed.
