Sunday was quite an oddity for the 2012 Dallas Cowboys. For a team that has almost no success scoring points this season, they were given the gift of help from their defense and special teams. The defense has had a decent year, but almost nothing in terms of takeaways and setting up short fields, or even better, actually putting points on the board themselves. Meanwhile, the special teams have been anything but special. Kick returns have ranked in the bottom third of the league the entire year. Punt returns, through 7 games, showed the Cowboys at 31st in the NFL, with 15 returns for 83 yards (5.53 per) - even though Dez Bryant had a 44-yard return back in Week 3 against Tampa Bay. The average drops to about 2 yards a return if you subtract that one large return. It has just been very difficult to improve the opportunities of the offense if you can never present them with a short field.
