According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have placed starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on the disabled list with an undisclosed neck injury.
First baseman Mauro Gomez has been added to the major league roster. Gomez hit .311/.366/.614 with 19 home runs, 26 doubles, and a triple in 72 games for the PawSox. Gomez was up briefly for the Red Sox earlier this season, going 0-2 with a strikeout.
In addition, right handed starter Justin Germano’s contract has been purchased from Pawtucket. He had an opt out clause in his contract, and he would have likely opted out of his contract if the Red Sox didn’t call him up today. Germano was 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP in 17 games for the PawSox. It is likely that he’ll replace Dice-K in the 6 man rotation for now.
The move to call up Gomez was likely as an insurance option if Will Middlebrooks isn’t able to come back soon.
