Former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier (pictured) has promised to move to the UFC light heavyweight division for his next fight. While UFC president Dana White was far more impressed with Cormier’s sophomore showing in the UFC than in his big league debut, White isn’t sure how well the wrestler-turned-slugger will fare in the lighter weight class. “I thought he looked a million percent better than the fight he had with Frank Mir,” White stated after Cormier’s lopsided victory over Roy Nelson at UFC 166. “He outwrestled him, he beat him standing up, he was kicking more than Roy. I mean, Roy was just standing there getting lit up. “At 205, I don’t know. I don’t know where he’s gonna fit in the 205 … the 205-pound division has been one of the – if not the nastiest divisions in the UFC, forever. Guys are faster, a lot of guys are taller in that division. It’s not a easy division to cut down to.” When asked if former light heavyweight top contender Alexander Gustafsson is a possibility to welcome Cormier to the class, White simply said, “Yeah.” If that’s the case, Cormier isn’t so much concerned with the who as he is with the where. “I have no problem fighting Alexander Gustafsson, but my concern is Alexander is going to fight in Europe somewhere next,” Cormier stated on this week’s edition of “UFC Tonight.” “I don’t want to make my first cut down to 205 oversees. I need food here in the US. I would fight him, but I’d rather not do it overseas.” Gustafsson is expected to headline the UFC’s next show in his homeland of Sweden. Given Cormier’s wish to remain stateside, he prefers to have “fights that matter” and threw out names like Phil Davis and Antônio Rogerio Nogueira. Cormier owns an unblemished 13-0 professional record, with all of his scraps taking place at heavyweight. Some believe he packs the arsenal to dethrone reigning UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones.
