It appears that David Ross won’t be out for long after injuring his leg during a collision with third baseman Will Middlebrooks on Tuesday night. Pete Abraham caught up with the Red Sox backup catcher, who said he could probably play if he played a different position. The Red Sox listed Ross’ injury as a left quad contusion. “Obviously I’m a little sore, but I think I just jammed the top of knee,” Ross told Abraham. “The top of my kneecap’s pretty sore, some swelling in there. If I wasn’t a catcher I think I’d be fine. But the squatting is a little sore. I couldn’t get up there in case a ball was in the dirt and stop it from going to the backstop or anything. “It happened so fast, I didn’t even watch the replay, everybody told me my shin guard as I hit the ground, kind of folded over and my knee hit the dirt pretty hard. So it was right on top of my knee. I don’t know. It was kind of funny. They said there was no real angle where you could actually see it. But probably just jammed it into the ground pretty hard. I might need to watch what I eat a little bit. There’s a lot of weight going down on these knees.” The collision occurred in foul territory by third base. Ross hit the ground hard and sent Middlebrooks careening into the wall as both players were going for a pop up. Boston has plenty of depth at catcher with Mike Napoli, a catcher during the first seven years of his career, on the roster and Ryan Lavarnway hitting well in Triple-A. Ross is flashing his power for the Red Sox this season. He’s collected five home runs in 13 games while batting .237 with a .920 OPS. His 9.5 at bats per home run leads the American League.
