The Devils placed forward Patrik Elias on injured reserve and designated forward Mattias Tedenby as an injured non-roster player today to get down to the 23-player roster limit by today’s 5 p.m. deadline for the start of the 2013-14 season. Earlier today the Devils sent right wing Cam Janssen down to Albany of the AHL after he cleared waivers. Elias’ time on the IR can be back dated to the time of his injury which was in the Devils’ 2-1 preseason win in Philadelphia last Tuesday. That would make him eligible to come off the injured reserve Wednesday—seven days without playing—so he could still play in the team’s regular season opener Thursday in Pittsburgh.. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said the team is still “hoping” Elias will be ready for the opener. “We’re certainly hoping and he sounds good and if that happens we’ll have to make a move” Lamoriello said. Lamoriello acknowledged that today’s moves basically just bought him a little more time to get the roster settled. “When time is on your side you use it” he said. After playing last Tuesday in Philadelphia Elias did not skate for five days before returning to practice this morning. He said after practicing today that he would “be fine” to play in Thursday’s regular season opener in Pittsburgh however and that “The mystery injury is gone.” Tedenby was injured during the Devils’ Sept. 20 practice. He called it a lower-body injury (suspected to be a groin strain). Tedenby did not practice for five days after that before taking part in the team’s morning skate last Thursday.
