DG 125

Posted June 23, 2012

I haven't posted anything for quite a while. For that I apologize. But behind the scenes I have been trying to keep track of things. Sadly the bad news (Julio Jones, Davone Bess, Michael Martinez) seems to be outnumbering the good recently. Anyway, a long time ago I did some dread galleries covering the first two months of the 2011-12 College Basketball season. Now let's take a look at the rest of the season, starting with January action in DG125.

.

1. Oklahoma F Romero Osby tries to draw a charging foul but instead gets called for a foul (I think) as freshman F Terran Petteway of Texas Tech puts up a shot during 1st half on Jan. 17 .....

.

2. ..... This time it's Osby shooting against Petteway - and with a lot more authority - during 2nd half. Petteway totalled 3 assists, 5 rebounds, and 7 points in a season high (to that point) 31 minutes, but Texas Tech lost 64-55.

 3. Freshman F David Rivers of Nebraska, likely a future teammate of Terran Petteway, drives against Ohio State G Lenzelle Smith on Jan. 3. Rivers was scoreless in 20 minutes in the Buckeyes' 71-40 blowout victory; and then he played in just 7 more games - for a total of 30 minutes - the rest of the season. He finished his freshman year averaging 1.1 PPG in 8 minutes per game, shot 23.3% (7-30), and had 16 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 assists, and 8 turnovers.

.

 4. Freshman G R.J. Williams of Loyola (Maryland) is called for a foul as G Antoine Mason drives to the basket on Jan. 27. Williams had 8 points and a season high 7 assists as Loyola picked up a 67-59 road win to improve to 15-5.

.

 5. The Atlantic 10's two players with dreads face off on Jan. 28 at Amherst, MA, as UMass junior G Freddie Riley defends while St. Louis somphomore G Jordair Jett looks to pass during 1st half. Jett finished with 13 points and 3 assists; Riley scored 6 points (on a couple of 3-pointers) in 11 minutes. UMass led by 19 at halftime and held on to win 72-59, a result that left both teams at 16-5.

.

6. Freshman G Kenneth Smith of Louisiana Tech throws a pass behind a leaping Tyrone Watson of New Mexico State at Ruston, LA, on Jan. 7. Smith scored 8 points and led the Bulldogs in both assists (6) and turnovers (5) as NMSU won the WAC opener for both teams 83-73.

.

 7. Sophomore G Reese Holliday tries not to lose possession as he is harrassed by G Tony Nixon (right) and G Stian Berg of Northern Illinois on Jan. 18 at Toledo. Holliday had 11 points and 5 rebounds as Toledo won easily 71-41.

.

8. Kenneth Faried may have been gone, but there were still some sick dreads at Morehead State this season. G Devon Atkinson, a JC transfer, defends as G Jewuan Long throws a pass during Morehead's 66-60 home loss to Murray State on Jan. 18. For the season Atkinson averaged 1.5 points (42.5 FG%) and 9 minutes per game, finishing with 22 assists and 18 turnovers in 26 games. And there was no trip to the NCAA Tournament for Morehead State this time. The Eagles finished 18-15.

.

 9. After playing more than 12 minutes just once in the season's first 17 games, Tre Nichols finally got some regular playing time for Boise State near the end of January. Here Nichols, a 5-11 senior, shoots a driving layup between G Chace Stanback and F Quintrell Thomas of UNLV on Jan. 25. Nichols hit double figures for the first time all season with 11 points, but Boise State still lost 77-72 in overtime.

.

 10. Tre Nichols wrestles the ball away from Wyoming G Luke Martinez late in 2nd half on Jan. 28; but it was too little too late. Nichols scored 11 points for the second straight game, but the Broncos lost their 6th in a row 75-64.

.

11. Levi Randolph, 6-5 freshman G for Alabama, dunks to give the Crimson Tide a 22-16 lead over LSU during 1st half at Tuscaloosa on Jan. 11.

.

 12. The SEC's two freshman guards with dreads go after a loose ball on Jan. 11. Levi Randolph had 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 35 minutes; while Anthony Hickey had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and only 1 assist for LSU. Alabama won the first of two meetings between the teams this season 69-53 to improve to 13-3.

.

 13. Anthony Hickey defends as G Rickey Scott of Arkansas drives to the basket on Jan. 14 at Fayetteville. Despite 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals by Hickey, LSU lost 69-60 to fall to 11-6.

.

14. Anthony Hickey shoots in 2 of his 10 points in front of Florida G Bradley Beal during 2nd half on Jan. 21. LSU fell to 0-3 in SEC road games with the 76-64 loss to the Gators.

.

 15. After missing 5 games during the middle of January due to a broken hand he suffered during practice, freshman F Johnny O'Bryant III made it back in time for LSU's home game vs. Kentucky on Jan. 28. Here O'Bryant tries to get a hand in the face of F Terrence Jones on a shot attempt.

.

 16. A sight seen often during College Basketball 2011-12 - F Anthony Davis going up to reject a shot. Davis, Division 1's shot blocking leader, makes Johnny O'Bryant his latest victim early in 2nd half. JOB III had a couple of blocks himself, along with 12 points and 9 rebounds, but LSU was no match for the Wildcats, losing 74-50 to wrap up a 2-6 January.

.

 17. Senior F Dominique Morrison of Oral Roberts goes to the basket against F Obi Emegano on Jan. 12 at Macomb, IL .....

.

 18. This time it's Emegano on the offensive against Morrison. Emegano hit all 5 of his shots from the field and scored 17 points. But Morrison was the star of the game, playing all 50 minutes and scoring 27 points, including the game-winning FT with 1.4 seconds remaining in the 2nd OT, to lead ORU to a 71-70 win over WIU.

.

 19. Dominique Morrison takes one on the chin as he tries to get a rebound against IPFW G Antwaun Boyd on Jan. 19.

.

20. F Steven Roundtree, ORU's other player with dreads, puts up a shot during 1st half. In one of his last games with dreads he had 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. When he took the floor for ORU's game a week later, the dreads were all gone.

.

21. There are no bad photos of Dominique Morrison's dreads. But I have to admit I like this one more than the rest, as he pulls down one of his 5 rebounds against IPFW. He also scored 27 points as ORU won their 10th in a row 65-54.

.

 22. Quincy Diggs kept fans at Akron games wondering for 2 months what he was planning to do with all that hair he was growing. Finally on Jan. 21 the 6-6 junior F debuted his dreads at home against Kent State, here going to the basket against G Michael Porrini during 2nd half. Diggs had 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists in his first game with dreads to help the Zips to an 84-75 victory.

.

Apparently though, Quincy was not satisfied with the look of his dreads (and I don't blame him), so .....

 23. ..... the following Saturday he went back to the afro in Akron's 74-64 win at Central Michigan ..... Then 4 days later ......

 24. ..... It's the debut of Quincy Diggs' new and improved dreads as he drives past Toledo G Curtis Dennis. Q had 16 points and 4 rebounds in Akron's 86-72 home win on Feb. 1 as the Zips improved to 15-7. These are the dreads Diggs kept for the rest of the season and the ones hopefully we'll see him with for all the rest of his games in an Akron uniform.

.

 25. Syracuse G Scoop Jardine knocks over Marquette F Jae Crowder and picks up an offensive foul early in 1st half at Syracuse on Jan. 7. Crowder finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds; but Syracuse, which had an early 23-point lead cut to 59-57, held on to win 73-66.

.

26. Jae Crowder tries to knock the ball away from St.John's freshman G Moe Harkless during 2nd half at Milwaukee on Jan. 11. Crowder stole the ball twice from Harkless in the game (a feat he hopes to duplicate in an NBA game next season) and had 4 steals in all. He also finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds as Marquette began a 7-game winning streak with an 83-64 whipping of St.John's.

.

27. Neither Jae Crowder nor Louisville G Peyton Siva can get a handle on this loose ball during 2nd half on Jan. 16. Jae had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a career high 6 steals in Marquette's 74-63 win.

.

28. Senior F Anthony Jones takes a jumper against Oklahoma State G Brian Williams during 1st half on Jan. 14. Jones had 6 points and 4 rebounds in 10 minutes as Baylor smashed OSU 106-65 to improve to 17-0.

.

 29. UCLA G Lazeric Jones has to deal with not one but two players with dreads during 2nd half on Jan. 5 as freshman F Angelo Chol (#30) and senior F Jesse Perry try to block his shot. Perry was called for a foul on the play (I think). Perry finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Chol had 4 and 5; but Arizona lost to UCLA 65-58.

.

30. USC C James Blasczyk sticks out an arm, but that won't stop Jesse Perry from getting to the basket on Jan. 8. Jesse hit 9 for 13 from the field, finishing with 20 points as Arizona split their L.A. road trip with a 57-46 win over USC.

.

31. Neither Angelo Chol nor F Solomon Hill get high enough to block the shot, but they bother Oregon F Olu Ashaolu just enough to cause him to miss the dunk during 1st half of Oregon's 59-57 road win on Jan. 14.

.

32. In a perfect world Jesse Perry would never reduce his dreads. But unfortunately there were a number of games this season that he felt the need to do it, including here on Jan. 19 as he gets double teamed by F Dijon Farr and G Cedric Martin of Utah. Perry had 10 rebounds and 6 points. Farr finished with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Arizona picked up an easy road win 77-51.

.

33. Junior F Keith Rendleman of UNC-Wilmington sneaks up from behind trying to steal the ball from F Jamelle Hagins on Jan. 2. Rendleman did not get the steal but did get 24 points and a season high 18 rebounds in UNCW's 80-75 home win over Delaware.

.

34. Keith Rendleman dunks uncontested to give UNCW an 11-point lead over Hofstra with :34 to go on Jan. 7. Rendleman had a team-leading 19 points and 8 rebounds as the Seahawks won their 4th in a row 86-80 to even their record at 7-7.

35. Keith Rendleman hits a left-handed layup against Drexel F Dartaye Ruffin to give UNCW their last lead of the game on Jan. 14. Drexel finished 1st half on a 19-3 run and went on to win easily 79-57. Rendleman was the game's high scorer with 23 points. The Seahawks went on to finish January 1-6 following that 4-game winning streak.

.

Elsewhere in the CAA .....

36. Marcus Thornton, 6-4 freshman G for William & Mary, goes to the basket for a shot against JMU on Jan. 4. Thornton had 16 points and 4 rebounds as W&M improved to 3-12, ending a 4-game losing streak with a 68-61 home win.

.

 37. Marcus Thornton drives to the basket against the defense of VCU F Juvonte Reddic on Jan. 19. Thornton and Reddic each led their team in scoring, Thornton with 22 points and Reddic with 28. W&M's upset bid fell a little short as VCU won 69-68 in OT.

 38. Here's Marcus Thornton doing (what else?) another drive to the basket against Drexel on Jan. 23. Despite 18 points by Marcus, W&M lost to Drexel 64-48 in the middle of a 9-game losing streak.

.

Two of the three players with dreads in the Atlantic Sun were on the court for the Jacksonville-Florida Gulf Coast game on Jan. 9 at Ft. Myers.

 39. Delwan Graham, 6-6 senior F for Jacksonville, grabs one of his 6 rebounds despite the efforts of FGCU F Eddie Murray during 1st half.

.

 40. For FGCU, here's 6-4 junior G Sherwood Brown, being fouled by G Russell Powell to prevent a dunk during 2nd half.

.

41. Delwan Graham looks like an NFL wide receiver making a sideline catch as he tries to keep the ball inbounds during 1st half. Graham hit 5 of 7 from the field and finished with 13 points in 19 minutes. Brown hit all 5 of his shots, including two 3-pointers, finishing with 15 points and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes. FGCU held JU scoreless for the final 4:02, finishing the game on a 9-0 run to win 77-66 and send the Dolphins (2-14) to their 12th straight loss.

.

After becoming academically ineligible for the fall semester (causing him to be kicked off the football team and miss the first 9 games of the basketball season) 6-0 sophomore Bryant Allen finally made his debut in an Illinois State uniform (after a transfer from Minnesota) on Dec. 18 - with reduced dreads .....

42. ..... But Bryant started 2012 off right, showing everyone that his dreads are among the longest and most awesome in Division 1 when they're not reduced, as seen here on Jan. 4 as he tries to keep Missouri State G Jarmar Gulley from driving past him. Allen scored 14 points in 18 minutes to help ISU to a 68-60 road win over Missouri State.

.

 43. Bryant Allen goes to the basket for two in front of Creighton star F Doug McDermott during 2nd half at Normal, IL, on Friday the 13th. Bryant exploded for a season high 29 points in 29 minutes, but ISU fell to Creighton 87-78.

.

 44. Bryant Allen and Drake F Ben Simons reach for the loose ball on Jan. 15 at Des Moines. ISU lost their 3rd in a row 77-60 to drop to 11-7, and Allen had to leave the game early in 2nd half with a sprained ankle. He missed the next 2 games then went back to reduced dreads for the rest of January.

.

45. It's hard to tell whose dreads are whose as the Missouri Valley's only two dreadheads battle for a rebound during 1st half at Wichita on Jan. 10. Bryant Allen scored 7 points for Illinois State, while junior F Carl Hall had 3 points and 2 rebounds for Wichita State in their 65-62 win.

.

 46. Here's Carl Hall battling for another rebound, this time above the rim, this time against Northern Iowa F Jake Koch during 2nd half at Cedar Falls, IA on Jan. 18.

.

47. Hair-pulling is not legal in basketball, but UNI G Marc Sonnen must have tempted to do some as Carl Hall puts up a shot during 1st half on Jan. 18. Hall finished with 11 points as Wichita State won their 6th in a row, 71-68, to improve to 16-3.

.

And now, here's a Rod Hall (no relation to Carl) highlight in photos 48-51.

48. After having the ball knocked out of his hands by Clemson F Milton Jennings in the free throw circle, Florida State C Xavier Gibson goes to retrieve it near the center circle, with Hall also pursuing it and gaining on him from behind .....

49. ..... Hall dives on the floor and beats Gibson to the ball .....

 50. ..... then as Hall gets a handle on it, he spots Jennings breaking toward the Clemson basket .....

 51. ..... It's not the prettiest of passes, but Hall shoves the ball forward just enough to get it to Jennings in stride, and Jennings takes it in for a dunk to give Clemson a 22-point lead with 6:00 remaining in 1st half. The official scorer gave Hall an assist on the play. If you want the video version of this play, it's included (along with another Hall highlight) in the game highlights from the Clemson website: http://www.clemsontigers.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/010712aaa.html ..... Hall had one of his best games of the season, finishing with 11 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals as the Tigers opened ACC play with a 79-59 rout of FSU.

.

 52. Rod Hall, 6-1 freshman G, drives to the basket against Georgia Tech G Mfon Udofia during 1st half on Jan. 21. Rod finished with 1 assist, 2 rebounds, and 4 points in the game. After leading 56-40 with 3:40 to play, Clemson barely hung on to win 64-62.

.

Let's wrap up January with Tim Owens, 6-9 senior F for Troy.

 53. I'm not sure about this, but I think this is Owens' block of a shot by F Antione Lundy of South Alabama early in 2nd half on Jan. 14. Owens finished with 4 blocked shots, 8 rebounds, and 5 points, but Troy lost at home 75-60 .....

.

54. ..... In the rematch two weeks later at Mobile, it looks like Lundy has learned his lesson, realizing that it is wise to fake before trying to shoot inside against Tim Owens. This was one of two times in the game that Lundy drew a foul on Owens. Tim was scoreless but had 4 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Troy wiped out a 47-27 deficit only to have South Alabama hit a basket with 1.8 seconds to go to win it 68-66.

.

55. Western Kentucky G T.J. Price is helpless as Tim Owens lays in the winning basket with :04 on the clock to give Troy a 67-65 win over WKU on Jan. 7, the Trojans' first road win ever against WKU (after 6 straight losses). Owens had a season high 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

Due to his own laziness when he was in HS, Owens got his college career started a bit later than most others. "It never even crossed my mind that I'd be playing Division 1 basketball" says the now 25-year old Owens in this Jan. 4 article in the Dothan Eagle that I'd like you to read: http://www2.dothaneagle.com/sports/2012/jan/04/troy-center-tim-owens-makes-most-chance-ar-2985473/

He may not be much of a threat on offense, but clearly Tim has some significant talent on the defensive end. I know it's a longshot, but I'd really love it if the late-blooming Owens keeps on improving and continues his career so that we get to see those sick dreads shaking on a pro basketball court somewhere in the years ahead.
