After last night’s blown save in the Phillies 6-2, 11 inning loss to the Nationals, Jonathan Papelbon had interesting things to say. Do you think he calls out the team here?
BEST OF MAXIM
At this point in the season and with the particular circumstances present, the question has to be asked, that of “does Jonathan Papelbon want out of Philadelphia?’ One can also presuppose the notion that Philadelphia might want Papelbon out of Philadelphia.Whichever way you may wish to look at the issue at hand, one thing for sure is that Papelbon’s time in Philadelphia may...
While the Philadelphia Phillies struggle to achieve even a winning record, speculation persists that Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon will be available before next month’s non-waiver trade deadline.
That’s not necessarily the case.
“Absolutely not, because these are guys I’d be better off having on my club than not,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told The Associated...

Pop quiz: Over the last seven days, which Phillie has led the team in on-base percentage? How about the last 14 days? 30 days?
If you guessed Ryan Howard, you cheated. Or figured it out by reading the title.
Over the last 30 days, Howard has reached base at a nearly .400 clip (.398), good for 17th in the MLB...
The Phillies have announced that Chase Utley will begin a rehab assignment in Reading tonight. Utley has been out since May 20 with an oblique/rib cage injury.
Before going to the DL, Utley hit .272/.339/.475 with 7 homers and 25 RBI. With Ben Revere and Michael Young hitting their stride, the addition of Utley – which could be as early as this weekend – should strengthen...
It's clear that middling teams playing in larger markets tend to be more hesitant to truly blow things up and turn their attention to the future (the Houston Astros being an outlier). According to Peter Gammons, this will seemingly have an impact on whether or not the Philadelphia Phillies trade starting pitcher Cliff Lee and closer Jonathan Papelbon this summer, something...
Most staffs typically have a significant drop-off after their one and two, but the Philadelphia Phillies with Kyle Kendrick have a strong four. How do the top rotations in the other divisions fare in that respect?
TAL’S HANDY STATS
I will publish the 2013 ERA for both the NL East and the other divisional staffs periodically. The number of games played by the...
Philadelphia Phillies' second baseman Chase Utley played in his first rehab game last night since injuring his right oblique during batting practice on May 20.
As reported by Stephen Pianovich of MLB.com,
"Utley, a five-time All-Star, went 0-for-4, but put some good swings on the ball and looked comfortable in the field. Since the injury, Utley has repeatedly said...
Earlier this week, a Boston-based baseball writer speculated in his column that the Phillies believe that St. Louis might be interested in Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Mind you, there was no real substance behind his assertion, but it made the usual rumor-mill rounds all the same. This move would make no sense for the Cardinals, and here are five reasons why:
*The Phillies are actually closer to the NL East leader than the 2nd Wild Card.*The NL East is the worst division in baseball. *Kevin Frandsen should have been starting at 2nd base all along, not Freddy Galvis. I wonder if he could play right field once Utley returns. *Ryan Howard has his batting average up to .276 and a climbing .796 OPS as well.*It's not fair that Cole...

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated second baseman Chase Utley from the disabled list prior to Friday night’s game against the New York Mets.
Utley had been sidelined with what the Phillies termed a mild sprain in his right oblique. In two rehab games Utley went hitless but did not experience any issues with his oblique.
Found this little piece of pop art featuring the Big Piece (see what I did there) and felt the need to post it. Currently the Phillies are being shutout by the Nationals. Whatever. Ryan Howard everyone...Meanwhile, Chooch is back in the lineup and Steve Lerud is back in AAA (where he belongs permanently). Also, Jeremy Horst was sent to the DL yesterday when John Lannan was activated.
Despite an 0 for 9 performance in two nights in a rehab assignment at AA Reading, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley may be returning to Philadelphia. After just two games, Utley feels he is ready and could play tonight when the Phillies take on the New York Mets at Citizens...
Ian Desmond hit a grand slam in the 11th inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep.
Jayson Werth's RBI single with two outs in the ninth tied it off Jonathan Papelbon, who blew a save for the second time in three nights after starting the season 13 for 13.
Starters Kyle Kendrick and Gio Gonzalez both...
