Hedo Turkoglu is not the only Suns player making noise at the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Steve Nash’s understudy, Goran Dragic, is leading his team to the head of the class in Group B. Unfortunately for Slovenia, Team USA is also in Group B. While Team USA is 5-0, the Slovenians are sitting in second at 4-1, their only loss coming to Team USA.
In his second full season Mwith the Suns, Dragic has shown vast improvement and more confidence in himself and his skills than he did in his rookie season. Dragic led Phoenix’s second unit with authority and often was instrumental in turning a deficit into a lead while the starters rested. Dragic’s speed, court vision and leadership qualities have Suns brass resting easier when it comes to the subject of who will take charge once Steve Nash retires.
In FIBA action, Dragic is leading his team in points and assists with 12.5 per points per game and 4.3 assists. Dragic is widely considered the best player on the Slovenian team. Most recently, Slovenia destroyed Australia by 29 points, clearing their way into the quarter-finals. Next up for Dragic and Slovenia is a tilt with defensive powerhouse Turkey. Turkey features another Phoenix Sun in new acquisition Hedo Turkoglu. With these Suns not only playing but leading and thriving with their respective National teams, the expectations of another deep run into the playoffs this season may not be as far fetched as it seems.
