Since the departure of Jose Reyes after the 2011 season, the Mets have been looking for a spark at the top of the lineup. Eric Young Jr. could be the answer to finding that spark. Since acquiring him from Colorado, Young has provided a dynamic top of the lineup presence the team has been lacking. Since Reyes left the Mets leadoff hitters have been players who get on base but, are no serious threat to steal. With a stolen base threat at the top of the lineup, the pitcher gets distracted causing locations to be missed and more fastballs to be thrown. Another aspect that Eric Young’s speed brings is the ability to create runs. Young could lead off a game with a single, steal second, advance to third on a ground ball, and score on a sacrifice fly rather easily. A lead off base hit becomes a run without another hit being necessary. Guys such as Ruben Tejada and Daniel Murphy don’t bring that to the table like Young as they don’t have the speed.  Eric Young is no Jose Reyes, but he is the closest
