A Knoxville news station has reported that ex-Tennessee Volunteers and ex-NFL quarterback Erik Ainge was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence. The arresting police officer noticed a GMC Sierra weaving in and out of traffic on I-40 West just after 1 a.m. local time. The officer eventually caught up with the vehicle and pulled it over. The officer aproached the vehicle and found Ainge sitting behind the wheel. The former New York Jet was asked to step out of the car and undergo field sobriety tests, which he failed, and was subsequently arrested.Ainge has been charged with DUI, implied consent, and roadway lane violation, according to the Knoxville Police Department.Ainge was booked and released by 5:30 a.m. on a $500 bond. The troubled former football player has a history of drug abuse and addiction. In 2011, Ainge revealed to ESPN.com that he has battled serious drug addiction in his past.Ainge played for the Volunteers from 2004 until 2007 and was drafted by the Jets in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He said his drug problem began in college and only got worse when he turned professional.Ainge was suspended by the NFL for a violation of their drug policy in 2009. He entered rehab in 2009, was clean for a while, but then relapsed with alcohol. He went into rehab again in 2010, however, he never returned to the NFL.Ainge claims he is innocent of the charges brought against him early Sunday and insists he has been sober since July 2010.
