Is Calvin Johnson really an elite receiver? This was a fair question to ask heading into last season. The numbers CJ put up with three different quarterbacks seemed to have answered the question in the affirmative but how was his season viewed nationally?
ESPN has tasked their NFL writers with ranking players within their position groups with each writer submitting a ballot containing who they think are the ten best receivers in the NFL.
Spoiler alert: Calvin Johnson ranks fourth.
Calvin’s eight votes ranked from second best (three votes) to ninth best (one vote) for a total score of 58, three behind Roddy White who came in third. Andre Johnson was voted the best wide receiver in the NFL while Larry Fitzgerald came in second.
A Calvin Johnson related excerpt:
Do not forget about Calvin Johnson: The top four spots were clearly defined, with the Detroit Lions’ dynamic wideout firmly in that group. He ranked among the top five on seven of eight ballots. Only Fitzgerald and White could make that claim.
Votes were submitted by John Clayton, Mike Sando, Kevin Seifert, Pat Yasinskas, Tim Graham, Bill Williamson, James Walker and Paul Kuharsky.
