In just his second Camping World Series start, Jeb Burton’s confidence is growing after a top-15 finish in his first race at Rockingham Speedway. The son of former Cup Series driver Ward Burton and nephew of current Cup star Jeff Burton, the 19-year-old started out his weekend at the Rock with a couple of practice sessions where he ran in 24th- and 25th-fastest. He then qualified his State Water Heaters Chevrolet 27th on the grid. Throughout the race, the handling of Burton’s truck greatly improved and he was able to bring home an 11th-place finish at the Rock, giving the rookie a dose of confidence heading to Kansas Speedway next weekend. Through three races so far this in 2012, Burton has two lead-lap top-20 finishes under his belt. I had the chance to talk with Jeb Burton before the race at Rockingham about his experience at Martinsville Speedway, his expectations for Rockingham, and his hopes for the remainder of the season. You finished 13th at Martinsville, did you learn anything there that you can take to other tracks? And what did you think of the track in a truck? Because I know you’ve raced at Martinsville before in other series. “It was a lot different from when I had been racing there. It was a little frustrating because I knew what I needed to go fast just we couldn’t find what I needed there, but we had a good run. Yesterday I had a bad qualifying lap so, we’ll have to get a little bit better today and hopefully move forward.” In practice you ran in the twenties, is there anything you’re hoping to improve on specifically for Rockingham? Or is it just a different track for you? “This is the biggest track I’ve ever been on. I want to be in the top 15, that’s our goal. We did it at Martinsville and we qualified good at Martinsville. I just need some experience here and I think we can do it.” Did your dad or uncle give you any advice that’s going to help you out today, with them both having won races at this track before? “My dad has been helping me a lot. I wish we had today where we could test and then race tomorrow. I needed another day of testing, but I think we’re getting pretty close.” What do you think is going to be your easiest track this season and is there any track you’re looking forward to most? “Martinsville is probably going to be the easiest one for me because I’ve been there, so all the other ones I don’t have any experience on.“ Do you think the veterans are going to have the upper hand today? “Maybe a little bit. They may have a little bit of an advantage because they’ve been here before, but I think I’ll catch on real fast. “ What are your expectations for this season? Are you hoping to improve on something certain or are you hoping to finish in the top-15, top-20? “Top 15 every week is our goal.” Burton’s goal of finishing in the Top-15 every week is a goal he has accomplished in his first two races of the season. Talking with Burton it was easy to tell that he has the drive and determination to succeed in this sport. And with NASCAR drivers Jeff Burton and Ward Burton supporting him and giving him advice, this young rookie is sure to go far in this sport.
