Champaign, IL – Anticipation continues to build as the Fighting Illini Nike Rebrand is set to be unveiled on April 16th at 7 PM. Both the University of Illinois and Nike have been tight-lipped about the rebrand; however, a video hyping the rebrand titled “Consistency” has been released. Previewing the Rebrand Although the video is vague, there are still some main points that can be drawn from the video. Consistency No surprise here considering the video was titled “consistency”, but its importance can’t be overestimated. The goal of the rebrand is to create an identity for all athletic teams at the University of Illinois. The lack of consistency before was embarrassing. Having long-lasting consistency will be key to building the identity which will help recruitment, and Nike understands that. One recent Nike collegiate rebrand done with the goal of consistency in mind was when the University of California Golden Bears rebranded their uniforms. In fact, the same motto “Respect the past, represent the future” was used. Drastic changes weren’t made to Cal’s uniforms, and they turned out pretty good.   The changes to the University of Illinois uniforms may seem more drastic because the current uniforms and logos are so scattered and varied. Ultimately, a similar result should be expected. Clean, sleek, consistent uniforms. FIGHTING Illini The new uniforms are going to put more emphasis on the “Fighting” in Fighting Illini. With the Chief seemingly gone for good, it’s good to know that the new uniforms will be based off more than just ‘how good Nike can design the letter I.’ “The emphasis on Fighting Illini is something that reinforces that spirit of what it means to be an athlete at Illinois. I think they take the field or the court and they’re ready to fight.” – Nike Senior Graphic Designer Clint Shaner Let’s face it, “Illinois Illini” just doesn’t cut it. Rebrand Rumors Third, alternate football helmet that will be white. A fourth “super” alternate historical jersey. It seems as if the plethora of rumors flying around during March have died down. No one knows exactly what Nike will reveal, but the fears of Nike destroying the Fighting Illini brand have faded. Now all fans can do is wait for the grand release.
