A day after being formally eliminated from playoff consideration, the Flyers head to Carolina to face the Hurricanes, four games away from the end of a disappointing season. Philadelphia (19-22-3) has struggled all season with injuries and underperforming players. Until a few weeks ago, when they won four straight, they could not muster up enough solid, consistent play to win more than two games in a row all season. Comming off of a 3-0, shut-out loss to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, the Flyers are now playing more for pride than anything. They have a chance to finish slightly above .500 if they can win their last four games in a row, but that is highly unlikely given this season's play, as mentioned. The Hurricanes (17-23-3) had begun the season with less expectations and initially exceeded them, leading the Southeast Division for a good part of the year as the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning struggled out of the gate. While Tampa never got it together (t...

Jakub Voracek and Matt Read also scored for the Flyers, who won for the third time in four games. Steve Mason, playing his fifth game for the Flyers since being...

Flyers Miss Playoffs

In a shortened season there is a greater uncertainty in the final standings than normal.  A run of good or bad luck will have a bigger impact in the standings than it does in an 82 game season.  Perhaps the team that will miss the playoffs that is the biggest change from recent results is the Philadelphia Flyers.  The Flyers have made the playoffs each of the last five years and...

Flyers-Hurricanes Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers are in the rare position of being relegated to just playing out the string as they visit the free-falling Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Coach Peter Laviolette led Philadelphia (19-22-3) to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons - including a Stanley Cup finals trip in 2010 - but the franchise seems likely not to qualify for the first time...

'Canes not finding luck during tough stretch

By Lauren Brownlow Less than 24 hours after dropping a 5-3 home decision to the Flyers, the Carolina Hurricanes avoided a season sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 3-2 win. Both teams had already been eliminated from the playoffs. But on Saturday night, the Hurricanes glumly packed up their equipment bags after yet another home defeat, preparing to fly to Tampa...

Game 45 By the Numbers: Hurricanes at Lightning

If there was anything the Hurricanes were long overdue for, it was an ugly win. During this brutal 20-game stretch, the Canes have lost in just about every way imaginable and it didn't matter how good or bad they played. They were plenty of games where the Canes were just awful and deserved to lose (including last night's stinker against the Flyers), but there were also a...

Game 44 By the Numbers: Flyers at Hurricanes

25 even strengths on goal. That is all the Carolina Hurricanes could muster up tonight against the Flyers in what felt like a grueling loss even though the final score ended up only 5-3. Both teams had been officially eliminated from playoff contention last night, so a win or loss doesn't mean a whole lot tonight right now but the team's compete level and play at even strength...

Hurricanes-Lightning Preview

Having been eliminated from playoff contention, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Carolina Hurricanes are left to try to end this season as positively as they can. So far, both clubs are having some trouble accomplishing that modest goal. The Lightning, though, have dominated this season's matchups with the Hurricanes and will go for their first series sweep Sunday night while...
