Happy Friday. In honor of the NBA Playoffs, which will give us four Game 6s this evening, here is an NBA-themed trivia challenge:
In Kurtis Blow’s 1984 hit “Basketball,” Blow mentions 22 current (at the time) or former NBA players. Name them in the comment section below. (And don’t just go to Lyrics Depot or YouTube and look up the answers. We’re going to use the honor system here.)
“Basketball is my favorite sport. I like the way they dribble up and down the court.”
Even if you aren’t familiar with the song, you’ll probably be able to name several players based on when the song was written and recorded and the following hints:
13 of the players named in the song’s lyrics played in the NBA in 1984, the year the song was released. One of these players played his final NBA game in 1984. Nine of the players retired before 1984.
Blow doesn’t name any of the players from the storied 1984 draft class, but he does name three players who entered the league in the 1980s.
Four of the players spent time in the ABA before the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. Three of the four were still in the NBA in 1984.
For that matter, see if you can name the player who retired in 1984, the three players who entered the NBA in the 1980s, and the four players who spent time in the ABA.
