Tigers (29-21) at Pirates (32-20) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates-Tigers “rivalry” shifts to PNC for two games after the clubs split the two games in Detroit. The Bucs are home through the weekend (the Reds come in on Friday), and it should be a fun homestand with two very tough teams coming in. Notes: The Pirates bullpen has been dubbed the “shark tank” … and now there actually is a shark tank in the clubhouse. The Bucs enter action today in third in the NL Central. They also have the third best record in all of baseball. While Jeanmar Gomez has been fantastic so far, Pat and Charlie both explain why you shouldn’t expect his great success to continue. Tonight’s starters… Anibal Sanchez (5-4, 2.38) vs. A.J. Burnett (3-5, 2.57) The Pirates have been striking out a ton over the last few games, and that’s bad news with a matchup against Sanchez looming. The righty has been pitching extremely well and came within two outs of a no hitter in his last start. The Tigers really have a ridiculous pitching staff – Verlander and Sanchez as a 1-2 punch, then another good starter in Doug Fister the Bucs will see tomorrow, strikeout machine Max Scherzer, and Rick Porcello (who we saw dominate yesterday) as the fifth starter. Burnett has also been pitching extremely well lately, but hasn’t gotten any run support — and it doesn’t seem too likely he’ll get much tonight either. Regardless, you couldn’t have asked for anything more from AJ. After struggling to get past six early in the year, he’s gotten through seven innings in five straight starts and still leads the league in strikeouts.
