Red Wings overnight report: on Brunner, the ‘Griffins championship bump’ and ‘Studio P’

As we've discussed over the past week or so, the Red Wings appear to be ready to move on from Valtteri Filppula, they've got a hard decision to make about Daniel Cleary, and in terms of both their restricted free agents (Joakim Andersson, Jakub Kindl, Gustav Nyquist and Brendan Smith) and free agents-to-be, the Wings find themselves in the most peculiar pickle regarding one...

Datsyuk inks 3 year extension with the Wings… puts KHL speculation to bed

The Red Wings and their fans got some very good news Tuesday morning as it was announced that Pavel Datsyuk and the team inked a three year extension to his current deal that was set to expire after this upcoming season. Datsyuk first announced the deal on his Twitter page as speculation to a deal being close emerged in recent days. Signed 3 yr. extension. Detroit, glad to be here...

The Red Wings could’ve ended up with Dmirti Kalinin had Hakan Andersson not seen Pavel Datsyuk play

The Detroit Red Wings' signing of Pavel Datsyuk to a 3-year extension (with one year already remaining on Datsyuk's current contract) is a game-changer in terms of shaping the team going forward, but Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson related a tale to MLive's Ansar Khan that few fans know: the Wings had absolutely no idea who Datsyuk was when Andersson...

Now That Detroit Red Wings’ Arena Redesign Can Move Foward, Let’s Mix the Old With the New

When a new hockey rink becomes a reality in Detroit, the history of Olympia Stadium and Joe Louis Arena should be readily visible. (Robert Wilson, Flickr) All of a sudden on Wednesday afternoon, the Detroit Red Wings’ once seemingly stagnant plans for a new arena received a huge, unexpected boost forward. A $650 million dollar project to build a new arena, shopping district and...

New arena will help procure players for Wings

For several years I broadcasted the Red Wings' pregame and postgame shows at Joe Louis Arena from a womens bathroom, which I fondly called Studio P. It was a great location because its just outside the Wings dressing room. Before each game began, the Wings would line up to go onto the ice and I could see and hear them through the doorway of the bathroom. Many times players...

Red Wings overnight report: extending Pavel Datsyuk is a keystone moment for the Wings going forward

The Detroit Red Wings' signing of Pavel Datsyuk to a 3-year contract extension earned the worldwide coverage and almost exultant joy GM Ken Holland (and Datsyuk himself) related to the Wings' press corps and The Fan 590 on Tuesday. Datsyuk remains one of the best players in the world at 35 years of age (see: TSN's Play of the Year showdown, in which Datsyuk dekes through...

Red Wings overnight report: talkin’ about the proposed follow-on rink and surrounding development

Because there have been two entries dedicated to the topic (please check out the Griffins celebration entry, too, because the gents had a good old time with their fans), and because it's the thrust of this overnight report, let's get down to brass tacks, or something like it: The proposal for the Red Wings' follow-on rink to Joe Louis Arena was approved by the Downtown...

Red Wings and DDA announce $650 million dollar arena plan… but can Detroit afford it?

Good news Red Wings fans, those long lines to use the restrooms, lack of amenities while attending Red Wings games and making sure a life insurance policy is in hand while climbing the JLA steps may soon be coming to an end. Wednesday, the Wings and the Downtown Development Authority announced a $650 million plan for a new 18,000 seat arena and entertainment district that would replace...

Red Wings mid-day news: rink talk, praise for Paek, scouting David Clarkson and charitable news

Amongst this afternooon's Red Wings-related news: We're still talking about the follow-on rink that serve as the Red Wings' next arena, and I hate to agree with this point by the Free Press's Helene St. James, but she's spot-on: Every single remotely new NHL arena has corporate sponsor name. Going to be the same with #RedWings new digs. $$ talks. ...

Video: Grand Rapids Griffins Clinch 2013 Calder Cup Championship

It’s not quite a Stanley Cup championship, but the Detroit Red Wings franchise ought to be thrilled with the Grand Rapids Griffins’ run to their first-ever Calder Cup championship this season. The Griffins picked up the series-clinching win over Syracuse on Tuesday night in Game 6, after losing Games 4 and 5 at home. In case you missed the Griffins’ historic victory, here...
