Former Kentucky guard Archie Goodwin was one of those players I thought needed another year in college. Goodwin is physically not ready for the pro game, and he’s more than likely going to be in the D-League. I always had a feeling his mind was in the NBA while he was still serving his 1-year in Lexington. Goodwin never seemed to develop or improve that much under the coaching of John Calipari. NBA Draft executives have made note, and that is a major concern for someone looking to draft him. Goodwin was always trying to drive to the basket and overpower anyone and anything in his way. He may have had success doing that in high school, but that mentality hurt him in college. If he tries that in the NBA? He’ll get hurt. During today’s NBA Draft combine, Goodwin was participating in workouts in front of NBA personnel to showcase his skills. Most of the NBA Draft participants who are expected to be picked in the high first round sat out of today’s workouts. Some of the participants that sat out may have already received a promise from a team in the lottery. If you fall to us, we will take you with this pick kind of deal. For guys like Archie Goodwin, these combine workouts could shoot their draft stock into the lottery. Or, the workouts can expose each and every flaw and your draft stock will plummet. For Goodwin, he struggled the most with the shooting drills. His outside shot appeared very flat, and his draft stock may have taken a hit today. When asked if the incoming recruiting class at UK effected his decision, Goodwin denied the notion. I personally don’t believe him. If he would have stayed at Kentucky, he would have came off of the bench. The hit in playing time, having to share the spotlight, and possibly sitting behind a freshman? Thanks, but no thanks. Having to stay at Kentucky for possibly 2 or 3 years? Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t blame him for chasing his dream, and ultimately that’s what is going to make him the happiest. I only hope that he has the patience and will put in the work needed for him to improve his game enough to be successful in the league. He needs to prove he has the ability to be coached, improve from instruction, and is worthy of an NBA contract. While I do see him spending time in the NBA’s Developmental League, I believe he could utilize his time there to work on his game and make an NBA roster. Best of luck to him and the rest of the NBA Draft hopefuls.
