Arkansas State says defensive coordinator John Thompson will serve as interim coach for the Red Wolves as they prepare to play No. 25 Kent State in the GoDaddy.com bowl next month.
Thompson takes over for Gus Malzahn, who's leaving Arkansas State for Auburn after one season. Malzahn led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record and a Sun Belt Conference championship.

Arkansas State is having to look for a new head football coach now that Guz Malzahn bolted to Auburn after just one year in Jonesboro. Unlike snakebitte-n Tennessee, there is actually someone who actually is interested in coaching the Red Wolves. The bad news for Arkansas St.? It's Bobby Petrino. JONESBORO (12/5/12) – Arkansas State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir announced Wednesday that current defensive coordinator John Thompson has been named the Red Wolves’ interim head football coach, effective immediately.
One Arkansas State in-state commitment will graduate high school in the next week or so and has plans on enrolling in college in January. Bentonville's Garrett Kaufman remains committed to ASU, but is uncertain with his future with the Red Wolves. Go "Inside" to see what he had to say.
