RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Andrew Ladd scored 16 seconds into overtime and the Winnipeg Jets beat Carolina 4-3 on Friday night to eliminate the Hurricanes from playoff contention. Kyle Wellwood scored the tying goal with 4:47 left in regulation and added an assist, while Jim Slater scored and Nik Antropov added a goal in his return to the lineup for the Jets. They trailed 3-1 midway through the second period before rallying to keep their slim postseason hopes alive. The decisive sequence started when Carolina rookie Justin Faulk slipped in the corner at the start of overtime. The puck made its way to Zach Bogosian at the blue line, he threw it toward the net and Ladd snatched it up and snapped it past Cam Ward. Eric Staal scored his 250th career goal and Derek Joslin and Brandon Sutter added goals for the Hurricanes. Chris Mason stopped 30 shots for the Jets. Ward finished with 31 saves. The Hurricanes were playing at home for the first time since going 1-2 on a trip that put them ...

Canes' season offers hope, playoffs or not

RALEIGH, N.C. --- The celebration outside of newly-named PNC Arena prior to Friday night's Carolina Hurricanes hockey game had a Stanley Cup fever feel to it. The folks here in hoops heaven are actually familiar with the NHL's playoffs, as they rejoiced in winning a Cup in 2006 and played for one in 2002. The Canes advanced to the Eastern Conference finals in 2009, as well...

What to make of these Jets?

So I’ve had full write-ups of both the Jets’ recent home games (Ottawa Senators Monday, New York Rangers Wednesday) done but have scrapped both. I feel like a broken record at this point - ineffective special teams, an inability to play 60 solid minutes, bad defensive coverage, etc. I scrapped ‘em both. Instead, I’d love to hear what people think the Jets need going forward...

Carolina A Team On The Rise

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer, There are still four games left, but the season ended Friday night. There was disappointment, but there was nothing abrupt about it. The players have seen this coming for months. The numbers finally caught up with reality, that’s all. Most of this group will be together next year, from the coaches on down. Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New Jersey Devils 3/31/12

This may have been one of the worst performances that the Hurricanes have turned in this season. Not only were they shutout 5-0 by the Devils, but they looked just flat-out pathetic in doing so. Carolina had only six even strength scoring chances through two periods of play and that was with them playing from behind. The 'Canes getting outchanced every game is something that...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Winnipeg Jets 3/30/12 Scoring Chances

For what I feel like is the twentieth time this season, the Carolina Hurricanes played a solid game for about 40 minutes, took a lead into the third period only to give it up and lose the game in overtime. That might be a bit of an exgerration, but I feel like I've seen this script way too many times this season and seeing this team constantly blow leads eventually grates on...
