Although the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets on Friday night, there was one positive sign for the Amazin’s: Ike Davis is beginning to hit his stride at the plate. Davis was faced with a possible demotion earlier this week when the Mets traveled to Yankee Stadium, but proceeded to have a two-hit night that included a two-run single that knocked Yankees starter David Phelps out of the game after only one-third of an inning. Davis sat during Thursday’s finale but saw himself back in the lineup on Friday night in Miami, batting eight to relieve some of the stress of the middle of the order. After Marlon Byrd was picked off between first and second base, Davis drove a ball to the gap for a double that would have presumably helped the Mets jump out to an early lead in the game. Although the circumstances proved to be unfortunate, the Mets getting help from a big bat in their lineup is imperative for this club’s fight for .500. Davis has now collected five hits in his last 17 at-bats to raise his season average to .163. As he continues to pick up steam at the plate, it’ll be interesting to see how Terry Collins utilizes the slugger in the lineup. It would be hard to imagine that Davis would remain in the lower tier of the lineup if he performs to his potential, but seeing how long it would take for Collins to have confidence in Davis would be the true story. The 26-year-old finds himself in a position where he can be a serious help to a club fighting to grasp a season that has only recently begun to swing in their favor. If Davis can continue to drive the ball as he has over his last 17 at-bats, it’s an entirely different team. It’s hard to pinpoint one player has a difference maker in this lineup, but beyond David Wright, Davis is the lone wolf who can help to right this ship. Photo Credit: Michael Baron
