SONOMA, CA - AUGUST 23: Ryan Briscoe drives the #6 Team Penske Dallara Honda ahead of his team mate Helio Castroneves during the IRL IndyCar Series Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at the Infineon Raceway on August 23, 2009 in Sonoma, California. (Photo by Darrell Ingham/Getty Images)

Ryan Briscoe can be the guy that steals a win on Sunday and salvages a disappointing season for the Australian at Team Penske. Briscoe isn't out of the title hunt quite yet as he sits ninth in the standings, but it would be a long shot to win the championship.

Nevertheless, a win for Briscoe would certainly salvage the season as his only highlight so far was winning the pole for the Indianapolis 500. At this point, that would be the only realistic consolation prize the team can really hope to achieve.

If Briscoe is going to win this year Sonoma is the spot he could certainly do it. He's entering this weekend on a roll as he's finished in the top five three of the last four races and has run very well in Sonoma over the past four years.

Briscoe has finishes of second, second, fourth, and third respectively since 2008 at the road course in northern California.

Making his chances even better, the organization he races for, Team Penske, has been very strong at Sonoma in recent seasons, sweeping the podium last year and winning the previous two races courtesy of Briscoe's championship-leading teammate Will Power.

With Briscoe being a free agent next season, he has a good deal of motivation to get into victory lane and prove to the other teams that he would be a valuable asset to sign.
