BELLE ISLE, MI- Who honestly would have thought Dale Coyne Racing would have a victory this season before Team Penske and Target Chip Ganassi Racing? Not only did they beat them to the punch but they dominated today’s Chevrolet Dual in Detroit Race 1. Mike Conway took home his second career Izod IndyCar Series victory and lead a race-high 47 laps. His teammate Justin Wilson finished third and led some laps today as well to give DCR two cars on the podium. The win today was also the third win for DCR in their IndyCar existence as they did it with a driver no one would have expected could do it. Conway, was out of racing and in England just four days ago. He decided in Fontana last year he no longer wanted to run ovals and only wanted to do road/street courses. That left him without a ride as he only made one other appearance this year with Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan Racing where he finished 25th. That just shows how strong DCR is this year as they’re now a contender for not just races but championships in IndyCar racing. Wilson won in Texas last year and that’s where the series is at next weekend. Wilson is also a title contender as he moved into the top five of the overall standings after Race 1. Factor in qualifying this weekend as well to show how good DCR is. Conway started 2nd today and earned the pole for tomorrow. Wilson will start eighth tomorrow and was the highest finishing Honda in last week’s Indy 500. Who would have guessed Coyne would have the top Honda team in the series?
