The new logo for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Photo: MiLB.com) One of the first changes made by new ownership of the of New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate was to announce their intention to change their name from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and allow the fans to select the new name in an online poll. As a result, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are no more. At a party in Dickson City, PA known to fans as “The Big Reveal,” ownership announced that the International League franchise would be known as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, effective immediately. The name references Scranton’s claim to fame as the birthplace of the electric streetcar. The change gives the organization its third new team name since moving to Lackawanna County in 1989. “We have a big trolley barn on our property in left field, and fans can take the trolley in to the game,” said Scranton/Wilkes-Barre president Rob Crain, who joined the team’s front office in July. “RailRiders ties right in with that and I think that the fans found that very appealing.” The RailRiders will open their 2013 season in a newly renovated PNC Field on April 4 against the Pawtucket Red Sox.
