In recent memory, the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball program has been an afterthought as far as the Big Ten Conference is concerned. Over the last two weeks, all of that has changed. First, a lot of Iowa’s notoriety came as a result of head coach Fran McCaffery’s colossal sideline meltdown versus Wisconsin back in early January. He was suspended one game by the Big Ten. But in more recent days, Iowa has gained some respect for its ability to play competitive basketball. After defeating Minnesota 94-73 on Sunday, the Hawkeyes are sitting at 15-3 with consecutive wins over Ohio State and the Golden Gophers. In a season that has seen several surprise teams enter the top 15, the Hawkeyes have as much right to a high ranking as any other team. To be sure, the Iowa Hawkeyes certainly have had a nondescript non-conference schedule and their RPI is .612, good enough for only 35th in the country. But all three of Iowa’s losses, have come against ranked teams, Villanova, Iowa State, and Wisconsin, and the Hawkeyes sit in third place in the Big Ten, at 4-1, one game behind the Michigan Wolverines. Time will tell if the Iowa Hawkeyes can maintain their success against a rough Big Ten schedule. In the next week they travel to Michigan and host Michigan State, currently the top two teams in the conference. If they survive against the best, they will continue to turn heads. And a deep run in March is not out of the question.   The post Iowa Hawkeyes Bursting onto National Scene appeared first on UTN Sports.
