Despite a timely touchdown pass from their rookie quarterback and a mostly stout showing from their defense the Jets seemingly did their best to bungle away Sunday’s game against Buffalo. But they survived beating the Bills 27-20 and they are 2-1 entering next weekend’s trip to Tennessee the first of two straight road games. Sunday was at times an absurd mess. The Jets committed a franchise-record 20 penalties for 168 yards. It was if nothing else a strangely unique way to win one of the Jets will happily accept despite its imperfections – not the least of which the Jets coming two penalties shy of tying the NFL record for most in a game. The Bills tied the game at 20 with 10:47 remaining on a 33-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion. The Jets helped sustain the drive with an almost comical string of penalties on cornerback Kyle Wilson who drew three flags in the span of four snaps including illegal contact on an incomplete pass on third-and-6 at the Bills’ 24. Wilson was benched but just for a series in favor of Darrin Walls after the meltdown – atypical of a day on which the Jets’ defense was mostly sharp. The Jets’ offense meanwhile responded immediately to the Bills tying the game. On the fourth snap of the ensuing drive Geno Smith hit Santonio Holmes for a 69-yard touchdown on a deep ball. Holmes beat cornerback Justin Rogers who was in the game because Leodis McKelvin left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and didn’t return. Rogers struggled throughout the game and Holmes getting past him for the 69-yard touchdown on a beautifully placed lob from Smith was the costliest miscue. It put the Jets up 27-20 with 9:34 remaining. In the third quarter the Bills had a chance to score their first touchdown when Kiko Alonso’s interception – Smith’s second and final pick of the day – gave them possession at the Jets’ 13. But the Jets’ defense held the Bills to a 26-yard field goal that cut the Jets’ lead to 20-12 with 5:38 left in the third quarter.
