Undefeated is hard to argue with but are 8 wins against a weak schedule impressive or have the stars just aligned perfectly for the Kansas City Chiefs? The first eight Chiefs' opponents have tallied a combined 20-41 record.Only the Dallas Cowboys have posted a record that is not below .500 and even they aren't a winning club with their 4-4 record in a under achieving NFC East. The Chiefs' offense has not exactly been electrifying, led by game-managing quarterback Alex Smith and riding the legs of one of the most dynamic backs in the league in Jamaal Charles. While watching the Chiefs win by the smallest of margins time after time and only putting up a 24 ppg average it is hard to believe that the Chiefs are in the top half of the league in total offense ranking 13th in total yards (2,646 yds) and 10th in total points (192 pts).In taking a closer look at their offense the flaw is easy to see.Alex Smith has only thrown for 1,795 yards with 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions and less than a 60 percent completion rate -- 224 yards per game is not mind blowing but it's also not the bottom of the barrel as far as quarterbacking goes.Over the past few season the Chiefs started a few sub-par quarterbacks who seemingly liked to throw the ball to the opponents more than the guys in red. So having a game manager who takes care of the ball and doesn't force it into tight spots is almost relieving for the fans here in Kansas City, only time will tell whether the people begin to demand more explosive numbers. Now to the man who has the weight of Arrowhead Stadium on his back, Jamaal Charles. The Pro Bowl play maker is on pace for a MVP type season statistically. At the half way mark of the 2013 campaign Charles is second in the league in rushing with 635 yards and 6 TDs. He is also the team's leading receiver with 41 receptions for 383 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns.Which means that Jamaal alone accounts for a combined 1,018 yards and 8 touchdowns, which is nearly 40 percent of the Chiefs' total yards for the season thus far. He is on pace for over 2,000 yards of total offense this season and 16 touchdowns by himself. If this lightening quick running back can sustain this work load this could wind up being a magical yet exhausting season for the former University of Texas star athlete. There are forces to be reckonded with on the Chiefs defense. It is a compilation of speed, power, agility, and extraodinary football IQ. Anchored by their two dynamic pass rushers Justin Houston and Tamba Hali this team is on pace to tie the single season sack record held by the 1984 Chicago Bears at 72.Justin Houston has already set a career high with 11 sacks putting him second in the league behind Indianapolis' Robert Mathis. They are +12 in the turnover differential and are only allowing only 12 ppg. This defense has made red zone stands time after time to secure late leads and created fourth quarter turnovers to seal victories. To sum things up, the Kansas City Chiefs are legitimate contenders in this league despite not being an offensive power house and playing a handful of poor teams. They have made critical adjustments and found the will to win time after time.Andy Reid came into Kansas City and turned a unorganized group of talented athletes into a contender that has a real shot at making a deep playoff run if they continue this growth that is exemplified in what players are calling a family atmosphere instead of just a team of prima donnas.
