Imagine Ron Artest Metta World Peace running for President.

It could happen.

Well probably not. I only bring it up because of MWP’s fan interaction during the Malice in the Palace . Why? Because eccentric Manchester United legend Eric Cantona is looking into running for the French presidency.

That’s right. The same Eric Cantona who karate kicked a fan in the chops after receiving a red card in 1995 (video above).

Talk about getting up close and personal with your constituents.

France’s poor housing conditions have struck a chord with the soccer legend and current Director of Soccer for the New York Cosmos (a team that doesn’t really exist – yet).

Cantona needs 500 mayoral signatures to be eligible to run in 2012 (apparently there are no caucuses in France. And in case you were wondering, caucus in French is réunir un comité politique).

Cantona has always been a thought provoking athlete. I mean with gems like, “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea,” there’s obviously something elaborate brewing in his skull.

In 2010, Cantona publicly called on French people to withdraw their cash from banks as a punishment for the financial crisis. However, it later emerged his actress wife had appeared in a bank’s TV commercial. Oops. How do you say conflict of interest in French?

His latest foray into the world of politics, he says, is driven by a sense of responsibility at a time of economic uncertainty. But his initiative has received a lukewarm political response.

Hey, who are we to judge?
