In their 53-year history, the Los Angeles Lakers have retired nine numbers. On Tuesday night, they retired Shaquille O’Neal’s number 34 to the rafters of Staples Center. In his nine years in L.A., Shaq helped bring the franchise three titles. The Lakers win championships and retire numbers. It’s what they do.
So when Shaq’s jersey was unveiled, it was a surprise to many that they botched it. As with every jersey that is hung from the rafters in every arena around the country, you see the back of the jersey – with the player’s name and number. But as you see, the Lakers had Shaq’s name and number 34 sewn on the v-necked front.
The Lakers have acknowledged the mistake and plan to correct it.
“The new jersey will be ready and installed prior to Friday’s game,” a team spokesman said Wednesday.
The Lakers also will have to replace the jersey hung up at the team’s practice facility because of the same error.
