LANE JOHNSON HINTS AT THE STARTING QB.

Posted July 24, 2013

HOW often do Right Tackles go #4 overall? While I'm sure it has happened at SOME point in the past, for all intents and purposes it just isn't done.

You draft a LEFT Tackle that high, because he's the guy who will protect your Franchises's blindside. Pass protectors go higher, run blockers lower. This is fairly common knowledge and I'm not shaking the world by saying it.

They already have a run blocker extraordinaire in Jason Peters, so that left them needing a pass protector. With that the Eagles drafted Lane Johnson #4 overall in April.

And now my point.

Whether Johnson lines up at LT or RT during the first 11-on-11's will tell you which way Chip Kelly is leaning in the QB competition. It won't tell you who WON, or who WILL WIN, but it will tell you who the coach is pulling for. (At least at the outset.)

The reason for that is simple. Reps. What is the coach trying to get the players used to? What are they rehearsing the most? What are they emphasizing first? In the limited time they have, flipping the Offensive Line's orientation to make both QB's comfy won't be possible without doubling up on everything and running the players into the ground in the August heat. Not to mention monkeying with the chemistry between Peters and Evan Mathis, or throwing off their muscle memory.

I'm sure Johnson will see time at both ends, but keep an eye on where he lines up MOST of the time.
