Jim Leyland inexplicably hit Ryan Raburn second in the order Monday against the Red Sox.  It wasn’t an attempt to blow up Twitter or to give Detroit sports radio hosts a hot-button topic.  It was to give Raburn a chance to figuratively put up or shut up.  The Tigers were facing left-hander Felix Doubront in the Little League field known as Fenway Park. To say Raburn has struggled this season is like saying Leyland is a casual smoker.  Through Monday, he was hitting .146.  18 hits in 123 at-bats.  And I can only guess that Leyland averages multiple packs per day (especially with the team underachieving this season). Tuesday morning Leyland told 97.1 The Ticket (WXYT-FM) in Detroit that: “I would never discuss something like that until I talk to the player. But the leash is probably not very long, to be honest with you. But like I said, I’m not going to get into that right now on the public airwaves. I don’t think it makes sense to do that right now. We’ll take care of that situation...

Tigers say AAAdios, send Raburn to Triple-A Toledo

Jim Leyland goes on epic rant over bad call

Tigers skipper, Jim Leyland, is known for his short fuse and temper and that was apparent following Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Leyland was upset on a call during the second inning that allowed Mike Aviles to continue his at bat. The umpires ruled that Tigers catcher, Gerald Laird, didn’t catch the foul tip before it hit the ground. However, watching the replay...

Jim Leyland is happy it’s Memorial Day

Some spend Memorial Day barbecuing with friends.  Others spend it out on the lake.  Tigers’ skipper Jim Leyland chose to spend part of his Memorial Day erupting at umpire Bill Welke over a terrible call at second base.  Tigers’ third base coach Gene Lamont was ejected after arguing the call. Early word from the Tigers’ dugout is that Leyland enjoyed a sports drink to replenish...

BOSTON - Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, angered by a blown call by umpire Bill Welke that led to three Red Sox runs in the second inning, exploded to the media after his team's 7-4 loss to Boston Monday. Jim Leyland Visibly Angry Following Blown Call, Loss to Red Sox (Video)

Detroit manager Jim Leyland wasn't a happy man after the Tigers fell to the Red Sox on Monday. And for good reason. One blown call in the second inning seemed to change the entire complexion of the game, turning the tide in Boston's favor for the rest of the tilt. Mike Aviles appeared to swing and miss at a pitch with a runner on second and two outs. Tigers catcher Gerald...

Tigers weekly: Raburn on short leash

Brandon Inge is already gone. Will Ryan Raburn be next? That scenario is becoming more and more realistic by the day. Quintin Berry's quick start to his major-league career means that he might stay with the Tigers when Austin Jackson comes off the disabled list later this week. That means Jim Leyland isgoing to have to pick someone else to send to the minors. For most fans, the...

Video: Detroit Tigers’ Jim Leyland rants about everyone doing their job

Manager Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers, registered one of the greatest rants of all-time. After the home plate umpire blew an obvious third strike call in the second inning of the Tigers and Red Sox’s game this weekend. Boston went on a three run rally (That should immediately raise an eyebrow. Anytime that team goes on a rally I sense foul play (the cream and the clear style...

Translating Leyland's postgame rant

By STEVE KORNACKISpecial to FOXSportsDetroit.com Jim Leyland was thrown out of his third game of the month, and retreated to the clubhouse Monday afternoon to watch replays that confirmed what his eyes had told him minutes earlier. The tipped foul by Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles had been caught cleanly by Tigers catcher Gerald Laird, and should have been the third out. However...

Jim Leyland goes off on the media

During yesterday's Tigers-Red Sox game, Mike Aviles appeared to strike out swinging for the third out in the second inning. But, home plate umpire Jeff Nelson said the ball was a foul tip that catch Gerald Laird didn't hold on to, which numerous replays showed was an incorrect call. The call was upheld by first base umpire Bill Welke. Aviles would later hit an RBI single...

What Is Going On With Umpires?

There has been a lot of crap going on with MLB umpires lately, and it’s getting ridiculous. You have Jim Leyland urging the media to hold umps accountable, Hawk Harrelson saying that umpire Mark Wegner “knows nothing about the game of baseball”, etc. etc. etc. etc. The most recent story involving umpires comes from New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin: Yankees catcher Russell...

Game 2012.49: Tigers at Red Sox

23-25, third place, 4 games behind Cle. A missed strike three on a foul tip that was caught cleanly, but ruled to have hit the dirt first, gave the Red Sox an extra strike and 3 extra runs in the 2nd inning yesterday, and though Doug Fister will never admit it, you can’t help but wonder how different the game could have been. The margin of victory was, after all, 3 runs. I can’t...

Angry Rant Volume 1

"These last 3 months of being a Kansas fan have been EXHAUSTING!" Let's see if I can piece something interesting together today.  I think I may have broken my brain yesterday with the massive amounts of alcohol I consumed.  My guess is it had something to do with the 32 oz. mixed drinks I started pounding at 2PM.  But you will all be happy...
