Bob McKenzie at TSN reports that the Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist's representatives were to begin contract extension talks last night. ...i think if Lundqvist signs a contract with the Rangers, he wants it to be long term. No way he's going to sign a five-year deal that would put him into free agency during his late 30s and likely the beginning of his decline. He'd lose a ton of money. ...having said that, I'd hate to see Sather just roll over for the guy. Giving him a 8-year, $80 million contract could really hamstring the Rangers capwise for years to come. There's been plenty of Cup winners recently with nothing more than above average goaltenders, so if Lundqvist is going to play hardball it might be time to seriously think about trading the guy (gasp!) for a huge package that could set the Rangers up for success for years to come. Meanwhile, Glen Sather told Steve Zipay at Newsday that a decision on Brad Richards is "coming shortly." ...

The Rangers have announced that they will not be buying out center Brad Richards this summer. The Rangers have one additional compliance buyout –they used their first on Wade Redden– but have until next offseason to use it. With a new coach in place, and without a pressing need to use the buyout this season, the Rangers have decided to see what they can get out of Richards this...

New York Rangers recommit to Brad Richards

The New York Rangers could have reset the team’s finances by buying out Brad Richards, creating $6.67 million in annual cap room for seven years. The team could have also escaped a potential compliance penalty that looms in case of Richards’ early retirement. But general manager Glen Sather opted to stay the course with Richards, betting that a coaching change will revive him...

Rangers Could Be Waiting on Buyout Pool Before Making Decision on Richards

As of this afternoon, Brad Richards has not been contacted by the Rangers regarding a possible buyout. Larry Brooks at the New York Post says one of the reasons could be that the Blueshirts are waiting to see the pool of players that are being bought out by other teams... "There is a sense that the Rangers would prefer not to exercise the buyout but want to retain the option...

Brad Richards- Buyout Or Not

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post, Richards, who struggled through the worst season of his career in the absence of training camp and a defined offseason during which he was involved in CBA negotiations, has seven years with an annual cap charge of $6.67 million remaining on his contract. There is a sense that the Rangers would prefer not to exercise the buyout but...

Rangers Not Buying Out Richards

TSN is reporting that Rangers have decided against using their final compliance buyout on forward Brad Richards this season. ...while I'm not shocked by the decision, all I know is they better cover him in bubble wrap next year to prevent any injury that would make him ineligible for compliance buyout next offseason. Although, Richards has only played less than 72 games once...

Jan Levine: Rangers Bring Back Richards, Major Implications from the Move

The Rangers on Friday announced they they will not be using their final buyout this summer and one of their two remaining compliance buyouts in total, when factoring in next year, on Brad Richards. I think I made my view on whether or not the Rangers should buy out Richards perfectly clear in this blog. But if it wasn't, here is the last paragraph again: "If this was...

Jan Levine: Lecavalier Bought Out, Should Rangers Sign Him?

I wasn't going to write a separate blog on this, but as we all wait to see what the Rangers do with Brad Richards, this has become topic du jour for several teams including the Blueshirts. Here is my take: 1) To buy out Richards expecting to Vinny is short-sighted and foolish as no guarantee he comes to NY, especially with Torts gone. Granted he may have a connection with...

30 Teams In 30 Days-New York Rangers

The Rangers looked like they were going to make a serious run at contending for a Stanley Cup until they ran into Boston in the Eastern semis. Henrik Lundqvist led the team from between the pipes but a lack of offense and a poor power play kept the Rangers from going deeper into the playoffs. Let’s take a look back at the Broadway Blueshirts. Team Name:New York Rangers Record...

Some teams are announcing the buyouts of some big names — Lecavalier — and other teams mulling over buying out big names — the Rangers and Brad Richards. And the salary cap is going down for the first time in history, by $6 million (U.S.). Between the draft and free agency on July 5, there...
