A day after the New York Mets exercised David Wright’s $16 million option for 2013, the rumors of movement towards a long term extension are already picking up.  According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News: Photo by Michael G. Baron Now that the Mets have exercised David Wright’s 2013 club option, the team and its signature player plan to intensify negotiations, discussing years and dollars as soon as this week, according to a person briefed on the process. Mets officials are determined to conduct talks in private, and avoid leaks that could complicate efforts to retain their third baseman. But a well-placed source outside the front office expects discussions to accelerate immediately.” Signing Wright to an extension is obviously the top priority for the Mets this offseason and I’m glad to see the front office treating the situation accordingly.  I think that if the team can ink Wright to an extension it will then make a move to do the same with R.A. Dickey, who had his $5 million 2013 option picked up yesterday as well.  Dickey has made it clear that the team will need to show him that it at least has an eye towards winning now as well as the future and I’m sure that same sales pitch needs to be given to Wright. It’s going to be an interesting month of November and with any luck the Mets can get Wright and Dickey signed, which could open the door up for them bring on other free agents who may currently look at the team as one with a thin wallet and a ‘win later’ attitude.
