PLAYERS: Matt Curry
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates
Matt Curry had hamate surgery. Photo Credit: David Hague Altoona Curve first baseman Matt Curry had surgery to fix the fractured hamate bone in his right wrist yesterday.  Curry was our #34 prospect in the Pirates system entering 2013, and losing the middle-of-the-line up threat will likely hurt the already struggling Curve offense. Before hitting the DL earlier this week, the left-handed hitting Curry was batting .248/.286/.400 with four home runs and 16 RBIs. While I did not receive official word on the length of his expected absence, generally hamate surgery requires about a two month layoff, so Curry should return to action later this summer.

Francisco Liriano Could Be a Difference Maker For the Pirates

Francisco Liriano could be a difference maker for the Pirates. Francisco Liriano will be making his Pittsburgh Pirates debut today, going up against the New York Mets. The Pirates agreed to sign Liriano over the off-season to a two-year, $12.75 M deal. Shortly after the agreement, Liriano broke his right (non-throwing) arm. That delayed the signing, and eventually resulted in a re...

Pittsburgh Pirates Recall Duke Welker, Other Notes

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed pitcher Duke Welker from their Triple-A Indianapolis minor league affiliate. To make room for him on the parent roster, the Pirates optioned Josh Harrison to the same Triple-A team while also releasing left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez after having been designated for assignment last week following a horrible year-plus. Look for...

Mets 3, Pirates 2

The Bucs dropped their second-straight one-run decision on Thursday night, as the Mets squeaked out a walk-off win in the ninth inning. And they did it against Jason Grilli, who was actually pitching in the ninth inning of a tie game!!! Mark Melancon also pitched the eighth in a tie game! I have no idea what got in to Clint Hurdle‘s head–he insisted just this past weekend...

Pirates 7, Mets 3

The Pirates bounced back nicely from a couple of tough losses with a fairly dominating win on Friday night to even this weekend’s series at one game apiece. The game basically came down to Wandy Rodriguez pitching well, Shaun Marcum pitching poorly, and Garrett Jones having a monster night. The Bucs jumped out to an early lead in a long and crazy top of the second inning. It started...

Liriano's debut

The Francisco Liriano Saga has been a long and strange one without Liriano ever even throwing a pitch for the Pirates. Today, he'll finally make his first start for the Bucs. Even if Liriano hadn't missed the season's first six weeks recovering from a broken humerus in his right (non-throwing) arm suffered under weird circumstances over Christmas, I'd tell you that...

Minor League Schedule: 5/11/13

Game 35: Mets 3 Pirates 2

Let's start here:  In the early moments of Little Big League, young Billy Heywood is considering naming himself manager of the Twins and he gets grilled by the team's pitching coach about what to do in various baseball situations. At one point, the pitching coach asks Billy what to do late in a close game with a runner on first base for a hitter in the middle of...

Baseball America Releases Their First Mock Draft

Baseball America has released their first mock draft for the 2013 draft. We’re a month away from the actual draft, so a lot will probably change between now and then. The Pirates pick 9th and 14th in the draft, and Baseball America has them taking two college players with the picks. With the ninth pick, the Pirates are projected to take Colin Moran, third baseman from the University...

Pirates-Mets Preview

While they're getting some solid performances on the mound, the Pittsburgh Pirates have been let down by a slumping offense. The Pirates hope to shake off a disappointing homestand and get back on track at the plate Thursday night when they open a four-game set at Citi Field against a New York Mets team having its own problems offensively. Following a promising 14-5 stretch...

AJ Burnett outdueled as Pirates fall to Mariners

There was much excitement for todays anticipated pitchers’ duel between AJ Burnett and “King” Felix Hernandez.  Hernandez was the better pitcher today as the Mariners edged the Pirates 2-1 to split the 2-game series. The first inning went the Pirates’ way.  After a perfect top of the inning by AJ, Starling Marte doubled to lead…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets – Game 34

It’s pretty rare that you hype a pitchers duel and it actually happens.  It did yesterday.  A few dopey Hurdle decisions and maybe the outcome is different.  What’s done is done though. Did you hear that Pitt is going to host Penn State in basketball next season?  This is awesome news for a formerly huge…
