Forty-seven drivers were on hand at Bristol (Ten.) Motor Speedway on Friday, planning to make qualifying runs in attempts to claim the 43 spots on the starting grid for Saturday night’s Irwin Tools Night Race NASCAR Sprint Cup event at the track, but heavy rains cancelled those plans. Instead, the starting grid for Saturday night’s race was set by Friday morning practice speeds. Casey Mears turned the fastest lap during that practice session, and as a result, will start on the pole Saturday. “It’s exciting,” Mears said of getting the pole. “I think for our team, Germain Racing, it’s been a long couple of years. It’s been good, but the team has really grown in strides and we’ve made a lot of big improvements this year.” Mears will be joined on the front row by Brad Keselowski, winner of the two most recent series races at the track, including a victory in March of this year. “You know, Bristol is always about track position, but I have had cars here in the past where you could pass a...
