The New York Mets were shut out last night, losing 3-0, to the visiting Atlanta Braves, marking the eighth consecutive home game in which they have scored three runs or less.  It is the teams longest such streak since 2003.   The club collected just five hits — all singles — and four walks while going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.  They are now batting .205 with RISP since the All-Star break in comparison to the .269 mark they hit in the category during the first half.

Following last night’s game, manager Terry Collins told reporters his team has been unable to come up with the big hit.

“We just haven’t been able to come up with a big hit. Especially here at home.”

So whats the issue?  According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Collins said “There’s been a lot of things”

“I don’t know if you can narrow it down to one thing. The thing that we did so well was when we got guys on, we got two-out hits. We’re not getting many hits at all, and especially none with two outs. We get a lot of singles. The extra-base stuff we haven’t had a lot of. We just haven’t been able to come up with a big hit, especially here at home.”

The Mets will continue their series versus the Braves this afternoon at 4:10 pm, sending Jeremy Hefner to the mound to face Kris Medlen.  If the offense doesn’t wake up, I don’t see anyway they will be able to snap the Braves streak of having won Medlan’s past 18 starts.
