Metta World Peace may be playing for the New York Knicks now, but he hasn’t forgotten just how good Kobe Bryant is. According to News Day, World Peace recently recalled the winning ways of Bryant, Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher, and says he sees that same kind of “killer instinct” in his new teammate Carmelo Anthony: It’s not just the ability to take over a game offensively. World Peace also likened the “it factor” he sees in Anthony to former teammates Reggie Miller, Yao Ming, Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher, and said it’s a main ingredient in winning a title. “You need those players like him,” World Peace said. “When you’re trying to compete for a championship, you need those guys. He’s like one of those guys, one of those guys that I played with — when I played with Reggie, when I played with Yao, when I played with Kobe and Pau and Fisher. He reminds me of one of those guys in his own way.” World Peace has talked about Anthony’s heart and said he has “a killer instinct.” But when asked how Anthony reminds him of the former teammates he named — many of whom played different roles than Anthony and Bryant — World Peace put it simply. “His consistency of being good,” he said. Carmelo is definitely one of the top players in the game and MWP should know this seeing as he’s defended him for all these years; now he’ll probably D up on Kobe when the Lakers face the Knicks. However, while he was still with the purple and gold, Metta made it crystal clear who was the better player. According to Mark Medina, World Peace said that Kobe has “every single [move] … he has everything” and even dropped this legendary quote: “Two dribble shot, three dribble shot, four or five dribble shot, 10 dribble shot. 24 second shot clock shot. No dribble shot. Shoot when I want to shoot shot. He has every shot. Kobe is amazing.” The funny thing about this story is that Kobe and Carmelo may actually be teammates next summer; Anthony can opt out of his contract at the end of this season and there has been a lot of speculation about the scorer signing with the Lakers. And as for World Peace? He has a player option next summer, so he could follow Melo back to Los Angeles if the whole thing actually does come to fruition.
