It did take Waltrip more than 15 years and 463 starts to nab his first-career Sprint Cup Series victory. Even one of his current employees (Clint Bowyer) once called him the worst driver in NASCAR. However, Waltrip now has a chance to forge his path as an all-time great in the sport in an avenue that even his Hall of Fame brother, Darrell failed — NASCAR team owner. Waltrip’s career as a Sprint Cup Series car owner didn’t start off promising at all. In his team’s first-ever race — The 2007 Daytona 500 — his No. 55 NAPA Toyota started the season in the biggest points hole in NASCAR history. Waltrip as a driver and owner sat at 27 points below zero in the point standings after his car was found to have an illegal fuel additive that increased his car’s horsepower.
